October 11th, 2008:
Pediatric Bioethics Conference, held in downtown Jacksonville's Prime Osborne Convention Center, organized by Alissa Swota, Assistant Professor of Philosophy. This conference will focus on ethical issues that arise in providing medical care to children. Experts from across the U.S. and Canada will come to discuss these issues and offer guidance in dealing with these intricate issues. We hope that this will become an annual event. Ethics for Disaster
Prof. Naomi Zack, University of Oregon, renowned feminist and race and gender theorist, will present the public lecture "Ethics for Disaster" as part of the UNF Inquiry & Insight Lecture Series. The event will be coordinated by Chloë Taylor, Assistant Professor of Philosophy. As part of her visit to UNF, Prof. Zack will participate in a special faculty/graduate student research seminar in the MA in Practical Philosophy & Applied Ethics. Naomi Zack received her Ph.D. in Philosophy from Columbia University in 1970 and after a 20 year absence from academia, began teaching at the University at Albany, SUNY, in 1990. She has been Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oregon, since 2001. She has spoken widely and written numerous articles on the issues of race, gender and 17th century philosophy.Her book publications include: Inclusive Feminism (Rowman and Littlefield, 2005); Philosophy of Science and Race (Routledge, 2002);Bachelors of Science: Seventeenth Century Identity, Then and Now (Temple, 1996);Race and Mixed Race (Temple, 1993); and the short textbook, Thinking about Race (2nd edition, 2006). Zack is also the editor of American Mixed Race (Rowman and Littlefield, 1995), RACE/SEX (Routledge, 1997), and Women of Color and Philosophy (Blackwell, 2002).More recently she has been involved in the application of philosophy to disaster preparation and emergency response. Forthcoming books include: Ethics for Disaster (Rowman and Littlefield, 2009) and The Handy Philosophy Answer Book (Invisible Ink Press, 2009). In addition to her research concentrations, she is interested in existentialism, contemporary ethics and philosophy of science.
February 7th:
UNF Philosophy Student Conference, with this yearís thematic focus on Latin American Philosophy and Religion. The conference is organized by Rico Vitz, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, will be held during one day, featuring two speakers Manuel Vargas (U. San Francisco; currently on fellowship at Harvard) and Guillermo Hurtado (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) as well as a panel discussion on liberation theology, which will be coordinated by Laura Ammon, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, and will include participation from members of UNFís World Languages department. Annual UNF Student Philosophy Conference
The Student Philosophy Conference takes place during a weekend in the spring, with students participating from Florida and other southern states, as well as from other areas of the country.
This is an exciting opportunity for UNF philosophy students to present their work as papers, to serve as chairs of sessions, and to meet students from across the country who share common academic interests. Two keynote speakers address the conference as a whole.
Philosophy Slam
The Philosophy Slam takes place each month, throughout the Fall and Spring semesters, at Fuel Cafe in 5 Points. This event was led by Dr. Wagner and is currently continued in cooperation with the Department of Philosophy of Jacksonville University, Dr. Eric Freiberger. Slam Web site
The next upcoming Slam, hosted by the UNF Philosophy Club, will take place Nov. 20th featuring a discussion by UNF philosophy major Aaron Kenna on the topic: “If You’re an Egalitarian, Why Are You So Rich?” The event will take place at the The Grape in St. Johns Town Center (with a special drink menu for the event) and be facilitated by Rico Vitz, UNF Assistant Professor of Philosophy.
