UNF Inquiry & Insight Lecture: Prof. Martha Nussbaum (University of Chicago) is coming to UNF to present an evening lecture on “Liberty of Conscience: The Attack on America’s Tradition of Equal Respect.” Prof. Nussbaum’s lecture is at 7:30pm on February 21, 2008 in the UNF University Center. Information about tickets (they are free, but required) is available at: http://www.unf.edu/ia/pr/media_relations/lectures.html (starting 4 weeks prior, around January 24th, 2008). Prof. Nussbaum will also conduct a session with graduate students in the MA of Practical Philosophy & Applied Ethics.
The UNF philosophy Department will host a series of talks in January and February on Race and Gender theory as well as Comparative and Asian Philosophy. The lectures are part of the Department’s national searches in the respective areas of teaching and scholarship. The
Student
Philosophy
Conference
takes
place
during
a
weekend
in
the
spring,
with
students
participating
from
Florida
and
other
southern
states,
as
well
as
from
other
areas
of
the
country.
This
is
an
exciting
opportunity
for
UNF
philosophy
students
to
present
their
work
as
papers,
to
serve
as
chairs
of
sessions,
and
to
meet
students
from
across
the
country
who
share
common
academic
interests.
Two
keynote
speakers
address
the
conference
as
a
whole.

Philosophy
Slam
The
Philosophy
Slam
takes
place
each
month,
throughout
the
Fall
and
Spring
semesters,
at
Fuel
Cafe
in
5
Points.
This
event
is
led
by
Dr.
Wagner.
Plato
Reading
Group
The
Plato
reading
group,
formed
in
Spring,
1998,
is
led
by
Dr.
Wagner.
Both
faculty
and
students
are
welcome
to
attend
the
group,
which
meets
every
two
weeks.
The
only
requirements
are
an
interest
in
Plato
and
preparation
by
reading
the
dialogue
under
discussion.
So
far,
the
group
has
read
the
Protagoras,
Symposium,
Phaedrus,
Timaeus,
Gorgias,
and
Meno.
Once
a
year,
all
members
converge
on
the
Athens
Cafe
for
a
symposium,
a
highlight
of
the
group's
activities!
