CareerOpportunities
Bachelor's and master's degree holders with extensive training in mathematics and
a related discipline, such as computer science, economics, engineering, or operations research, should have good
employment opportunities in related occupations.
According to a 1999 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers,
starting salary offers for mathematics graduates with a bachelor's degree averaged about $37,300 a year and for
those with a master's degree, $42,000. Doctoral degree candidates averaged $58,900. The average annual salary for
mathematicians employed by the Federal Government in supervisory, nonsupervisory, and managerial positions was
$69,000; for mathematical statisticians, $69,000; and for cryptanalysts, $61,100 in early 1999.
According to a 2005 survey by the American Statistical
Association on business, industry and government jobs, the median income for entry-level (non-managerial) statisticians with a master's degree
was $60,000. The median income for entry-level statisticians with a doctoral degree was $83,000. The median income for managerial statisticians
(min. 4 years experience) with a master's degree was $95,000; for those with doctoral degrees, the median income was $104,000.
The ASA also has a 2006-2007 survey of academic statistician salaries.
