The Spanish Study Abroad program consists of six weeks of intensive language study in Santander, Spain, on the coast of the Cantabrian Sea. Classes will be taught by highly qualified language, literature, and culture instructors at the Centro Internacional of the Universidad de Cantabria (CIUC.) The course schedule will allow students to have long weekends, so they can visit the city and/or region and mingle with native speakers in everyday life situations.
Students will earn six hours of credit for the completion of one course at the CIUC and another taught by the program director, who is a UNF professor. The courses will focus on language, literature, and culture. Participants must be at least 18 years old.

Santander is a city of approximately 250,000 inhabitants in the north-central coast of Spain. Given its temperate climate and proximity to the ocean, it is an important tourist destination during the summer. Considered one of Spain's most beautiful cities, it is also famous for its seafood, fishing port, El Sardinero beach, and numerous monuments and tourist sites. Santander is very close as well to the prehistoric Caves of Altamira and the renaissance city of Santillana del Mar. It is an hour’s drive from Burgos and Bilbao, and in close proximity to León, Gijón, San Sebastián and many other important cities of Northern Spain. Madrid and Barcelona are both easily accessible by plane, train, or bus. Madrid is 212 miles from Santander while Barcelona is 436 miles away.
Depending on their previous preparation, students will enroll in two classes above the intermediate level: Intensive Spanish Language and Spanish Literature and Culture. These courses are taught exclusively for UNF students. Those students who have not yet completed the intermediate level may enroll in regular classes offered by the CIUC. These classes are at the intermediate level and focus on language and culture. All courses will transfer to UNF as study abroad credit approved by the Department. The program director and the chair of the Department, in consultation with the International Center, will assign UNF equivalencies to the courses taken in Santander.
Students will be lodged with Spanish host families so that the learning process continues outside the classroom in a 24 hour, 7 day/week immersion experience. Families provide three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner.)
A faculty member from the University of North Florida accompanies the group throughout their stay in Santander and teaches the course on The Culture of Northern Spain. Optional excursions can be organized to points of interest both in the city and in the region.
Approximate cost for the program is $3,350*. This price includes international health and emergency evacuation insurance, fees at the CIUC, a group 4-day excursion, and home-stay lodging that includes three meals a day.*The price does not include UNF tuition, passport fees, airfare, books, local transportation fees, museum entrances, optional excursion expenses, and personal purchases (personal expenses are estimated at $600, but could be more or less depending upon one's own spending habits).
