PROCEDURES FOR SUBMISSION AND APPROVAL OF A GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE PROPOSAL

  1. Academic departments may propose courses for inclusion in the General Education program. Before submitting a proposal it is strongly encouraged that departments consult with the chair of the General Education Council (the associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences).  The chair of the GE Council can provide strategic advice and also inform the department of the meeting schedule of the GE Council.
  1. If the department decides, after consulting with the chairperson of the GE Council, to submit a proposal they should submit to the GE Council: (a) a cover sheet; (b) a brief (1 page maximum) description of how the course meets the criteria for the particular GE category, which GE student learning outcomes will be addressed in the course, and how these student learning outcomes will be developed the course; and (c) a copy of the course syllabi that includes explicit reference to both the course, and the GE, learning outcomes.
  1. The General Education Council must approve the proposal before it can move forward.
  1. If the course being proposed is a new course offering, the department must also prepare APC 1 forms.  Approval should be sought in the following order:

    • Chairperson of the General Education Council
    • Chairperson of the College Curriculum Committee
