Student Learning Goals
Communication students will be able to demonstrate the following competencies by graduation:
• Disciplinary Content Knowledge—Students will be able to:
Understand the process of finding, evaluating, and compiling information.
Understand communication theory and research methods.
Understand basic numerical and statistical concepts as and evaluate the use of such concepts by others.
Understand the communication tools and technologies that are appropriate in the work place.
• Critical Thinking—Students will be able to:
Demonstrate an ability to interpret and evaluate information.
Use logic to solve problems and arrive at solutions.
Work independently without relying solely upon others for guidance.
Apply laws, regulations, and ethics in communication practice.
Display an awareness of the issues and perspectives that exist within different cultures.
Use sources and information from diverse constituents.
Demonstrate evidence of professional, attitudinal, and skills development.
• Communication—Students will be able to:
Demonstrate use of standard English.
Use correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style consistently.
Write with flair and originality.
Discern the quality of own and others’ works for accuracy, fairness, clarity, appropriate grammar, punctuation, and style.
Competently communicates orally with appropriate style.
Evaluate, summarize, synthesize, and critique written material.
Demonstrate an appreciation for the diversity of groups in a global society in relation to communication.

Where and how the outcomes will be assessed:
• Evaluation of performance in an internship or by job supervisor
• Performance in a research experience by embedded instrument of tests, projects, and papers.
• Evaluation of embedded student portfolios or projects
• Participation in an exit survey in internship course
