Department of Communication

Chair's Letter

The Department of Communication offers the Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication. Each concentration offers a blend of theoretical and applied coursework. Our teaching and learning facilities include three computer labs and a television production center, and I am delighted to report that 2009 will see the department move to new facilities that will include a new state-of-the art television facility and a new online news lab.

The members of our full-time faculty combine significant professional experience with their advanced degrees and academic experience. UNF Communication students engage in community-based learning in all of our concentrations. Journalism students research and write the annual Hope Fund series of stories in the Florida Times-Union and contribute several types of content to the newspaper's Jacksonville.com web site. Every semester Advertising and Public Relations students create fully planned campaigns for First Coast area non-profit organizations. Electronic Media students produce In Tune with Jacksonville, a monthly public affairs program broadcast by locally by WCWJ-TV. In addition, during every term nearly 100 Communication majors complete professional internships.

Jacksonville is a great location for a program like ours. This dynamic top-50 media market is home to a large array of top-flight print and electronic media and advertising and public relations firms. The department enjoys a solid cooperative relationship with this professional community. Area professionals are frequent guests in our classes and also support our student organizations. In addition, the department involves the professional community in its assessment efforts and curriculum planning.

Since joining UNF in August 2007 I have visited most of the local media, advertising, and PR firms to strengthen existing relationships, build new ones, and to discuss the trends and needs of the professions. I have been gratified by the warm reception I have experienced and the many positive comments I have heard about our program.
