About Us
The Department of Communication is dedicated to the development
of human communication and personal expression in a
dynamic global community. The department’s primary focus is
high-quality teaching of applied and theoretical subjects.
The department is committed to developing instructional
strategies that will provide excellent opportunities for students
to interconnect across disciplines in a competitive world. To
accomplish this mission, the department will:
• engage in excellent instruction by ensuring that students
learn in formats appropriate to the mission of the College of
Arts and Sciences;
• focus its resources in such a manner as to deliver high-quality
educational programs supported fairly and equitably across
the disciplines. This fairness will be refl ected in the budget for
faculty, offi ce, instructional space equipment, student assistance,
faculty research and travel, library, and other support
services;
• offer programs that have relevance to the profession, the students
enrolled, and the discipline, Relevance will be defi ned
as a series of experiences that enable the curriculum to have a
vision, a mission and a clearly expressed objective;
• engage in the self-refl ection necessary to carry out our
mission. The department will evaluate individual program
components; will evaluate outcomes of individual students; will evaluate the key constituents of the various programs; and
will conduct regular progam reviews.
The department provides instruction in a range of communication
platforms from the Internet to wireless communications
to convergence technologies that require constant program
assessment, the revision of existing courses, and the evelopment
of new courses to meet ever-changing demands. The
Communication faculty also provides the theoretical framework
and practical application that enable communication
practitioners to enhance their knowledge and skills to meet
ever-changing market demands.
