Aim and Scope of the Coastal Biology Program

Coastal Biology Flagship Program
Undergraduate Travel or Supply Grants

The Coastal Biology Flagship Program will support undergraduate student travel or research supply purchases during the upcoming year.  For travel funds, faculty mentors will be expected to submit an abstract of their student’s paper and information on the scientific meeting where their student made their presentation or a one-page update on the progress of a student’s thesis research when research funds were granted.  The student must submit a C.V. with each request.

Travel Funds can be used for scientific meetings at which a student is presenting their Honor’s thesis or Directed Independent Study as an oral or poster paper.  Students should also make a good faith effort to obtain funds from other sources.  Interested students should submit a 1 page letter of application describing the research that will be presented and how the activity will further their academic or career goals.

Research Funds may be used to purchase supplies or equipment directly linked to student research.   Undergraduate students requesting research funds must submit a brief outline of their proposed research, a letter of support signed by their faculty mentor, who will be required to sign off on all expenditures, and a brief proposed budget indicating the amount requested and what the funds will be used for.  Funds will be dispersed on a competitive basis.  Typical awards are under $500.  The deadline to submit applications for Summer 2008-Spring 2009 is April 15.  Applications should be submitted to the Flagship Program Assistant in the Biology Office.
