Dr. Ross and students are surveying regions of the Dry Tortugas looking for diseased seagrass beds. Selected seagrasses are susceptible to episodic outbreaks of a ‘wasting disease’ that can contribute to rapid population decline. Research at UNF has been investigating the association of environmental stressors (high temperature, increased salinities, and anthropogenic impacts) on the “innate immunity” of seagrasses.

Welcome to the UNF Biology Department

The Department of Biology has a commitment to excellence in educating the general student body of UNF in biological principles and developing an understanding of science, applied writing, mathematics, analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills in the context of biology.  The strength of the department lies in its broad based academic program, collaborative efforts of faculty, and integration of undergraduates in all aspects of research.

The department believes that the active involvement of graduate and undergraduate students in scholarly pursuits is the ultimate expression of teaching and learning.  To this end, we are committed to focusing our resources of expertise, space, equipment, and time in ways that enhance scientific inquiry.  We seek to provide individualized attention at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to students interested in careers related to biological science.

The faculty is committed to relevance by searching for understanding and knowledge through the scientific study of life and dissemination of this information to students, the general public, and the scientific community.

By annually assessing and evaluating our effectiveness in teaching, scholarship, and service and responding with adjustments and improvements to our approaches, the department demonstrates its commitment to accountability.
