Biology Intensive Orientation for Freshman Learning Improvement and Transition Enhancement (BIO-FLITE) Program at UNF
What is BIO-FLITE?
BIO-FLITE is designed to give participants a realistic look at the fast pace of college life in the Biology Department. The program will be a 6 day workshop that takes place before Fall classes begin. The sessions will include lectures, seminars, workshops, a laboratory exercise and group activities led by UNF Biology instructors. BIO-FLITE offers a quick "reality check" to students who have been successful in high school and assume they will experience college with the same ease. Summer-long programs are expensive and time-consuming for the university faculty and staff, while first year seminars often offer help too late for first-semester struggles. BIO-FLITE is short, intense, inexpensive, and very effective.
The primary focus of the content material will be key topics covered in the first semester biology course. The faculty who teach this general biology course at UNF will teach and give actual exams during BIO-FLITE. The sessions will be infused with strategies that will help you be a successful student beginning on the first day that official classes start. In addition, you will meet other new first year students and be able to form study groups which should help you during your time at UNF. Finally, you will have be able to move onto campus a week early, allowing you to miss the long lines on official move-in day and provide you an opportunity to learn the UNF campus and get oriented prior to the start of the Fall semester.
Incoming students do not know what to expect when they begin college. Students (including those who have taken AP or IB biology courses in high school) are generally not prepared to meet the expectations of a college level courses and, as a result, often struggle in their introductory science courses. This program is based upon the BIOS model that has been successfully implemented at Louisiana State University for nine years. As a result of participation in the BIO-FLITE Program, students have transformed their approaches to studying and learning. They are more successful in their introductory science courses, are retained in the major at greater percentages, and they are more likely to graduate in four years.
