How To Configure a Microphone to Record Narrated Presentations

 This guide will explain how to set up and use a microphone on a Windows computer for recording audio. 

 

Configure a Microphone on a Windows Computer 

  1. Plug in your device to the computer via USB or headphone jack

  2. To access recording devices right click on the sound icon microphone1  located in the right hand side of the task bar.

  3. Once right clicked select Recording devices

  4. The Sound window will open on the Recording tab. Click on the microphone you would like to use to record audio, in this case USB PNP Audio Device

  5. Click the Set Default button

  6. A green bubble will appear next to the microphone you selected and it will say “Default Device” under the name of the microphone

  7. Increase microphone levels click on Properties and the Microphone Properties window will open

  8. Click on the Levels tab and adjust levels as needed and click the OK button


    The input level shown to the right of the microphone name in the sound window shows you how much sound is being picked up. If this is too low when talking into your microphone, your playback level will be too quiet. If this is too high when talking into your microphone, your playback will be too loud and may sound distorted. 
    For better playback quality adjust the microphone level in the microphone properties window so that when you talk into your microphone you see the green bar of the input level rise to about 2/3 of the maximum level.

  9. Click the OK button on the Microphone Properties window and then the OK button on the Sound window.

The microphone is ready to use. 

 

Configure a Microphone on a Macintosh Computer

 

  1.  Plug in your device to your Mac via USB or the headphone jack

  2. To access recording devices click on the System Preferences microphone10 icon located in your Dock

  3. Click on Sound

  4. Click on the Input tab and then select the device preferred by clicking on it and being highlighted

  5. Adjust the input volume setting. The input level shows you how much sound is being picked up. If this is too low when talking into your microphone, your playback level will be too quiet. If this is too high when talking into your microphone, your playback will be too loud and may sound distorted.

    For better playback quality the input level should be about 2/3 of the maximum input level when speaking at a normal volume.
