The input level shown to the right of the microphone name in the sound window shows you how much sound is being picked up. If this is too low when talking into your microphone, your playback level will be too quiet. If this is too high when talking into your microphone, your playback will be too loud and may sound distorted.
For better playback quality adjust the microphone level in the microphone properties window so that when you talk into your microphone you see the green bar of the input level rise to about 2/3 of the maximum level.
