World War II, the most cataclysmic, man-made event in history began with the blitzkrieg of Poland in 1939 and ended with the complete destruction of Germany and its European allies on May 8, 1945. This class will chronicle the events that lead to this climax in the European theater. In addition to the events shown in the Ken Burns movie, “The War,” we will also discuss such major events as the blitzkriegs into Poland and France, the British retreat from Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain and the invasion of Russia that occurred before the U.S. entered the war.

Recommended Book: No specific texts are required. For those interested, William Shirer’s “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” provides a succinct description of most of the events covered in the course.
Instructor
Wayne Heckrotte has taught at OLLI and will be beginning his fifth year this fall. His courses have concentrated on history including, World Wars I and II, the inter-war period and the history of baseball.
