    Webcast Software Requirements

The UNF College of Computing, Engineering, and Construction delivers high-quality, streamed webcasts using the Microsoft Windows Streaming Media Server 9.

There is a wide variety of software choices for viewing lectures provided by CCEC eLearn and FEEDS, and these lectures may be accessed whether your computer runs Microsoft Windows (98, 2000, XP, or later), Apple MacOS X, any modern flavor of Linux with a graphical user interface (including, RedHat, Fedora, SUSE, Debian, and Ubuntu), and some other "*nixes" (such as, FreeBSD and PC-BSD ). The key here is that "you have options," though you may have to put in a little effort the further you get from the mainstream.

Below are a few additional notes on available players.

In addition to the Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 and later (available to Microsoft Windows users), you may also wish to explore the following software:

  • VLC media player - this is a really nice, cross-platform player
  • MPlayer - this player is both a player and a source of codecs to work in other players
  • Media Player Classic - this is a re-creation of Windows Media Player 6.4 but with many additional features
  • Flip4Mac - this is the Windows Media Component for QuickTime for Apple MacOS X.

Linux users may already have codecs supporting WMV9 (check your distribution documentation). Of course, there are plenty of sources of instructions for adding support to most distributions. And, in some cases, there are scripts and applications that do most of the work for you (e.g., easyUbuntu).

Mozilla Firefox users may wish to try the MediaPlayerConnectivity Add-on, as this tool gives even more functionality to the Firefox browser for playing multimedia content.

As with any class, distance learning or traditional, be sure to check the class syllabus or ask the professor about any additional software requirements.
