Dr. Mag Malek served as an Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Competition Judge for all American Contractors in our regional area. Project competition categories were Commercial, Industrial, Renovations, Green Construction and Project of the Year. Projects ranged from below $ 5 million to above $250 million and included overseas construction.
Students of the UNF chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers successfully competed at the Michigan International Speedway. This is the first time UNF has competed in the Formula SAE annual competition. The UNF racing team finished ~80 out of ~120 competitors. Congratulations to the student team for an outstanding competition on their very first try. Dr. John Nuszkowski serves as team advisor.
Ms. Blanca Franco, Civil Engineering student, was awarded a $2,500 first prize in an essay contest sponsored by the Florida Concrete and Materials Association. Dr. Chris Brown served as her advisor in the competition.
Jeffrey Lam, Dr. Susan Y. Vasana, and Dr. Zornitza Prodanoff published their paper, “Preserving Useful Info While Reducing Noise of Physiological Signals Using Wavelet Analysis”, in the Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering (iCBBE2012), May 2012. Also, Dr. Susan Y. Vasana served as the Session Chair on Bio-Signal Processing and Analysis at the 6th International Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering (iCBBE2012).
Dr. Asai Asaithambi recently completed ABET Program Evaluator Accreditation training for Computer Science, May 18-20, 2012. Also, Dr. Asai Asaithambi presented a talk, “Teaching Computing in a Cultural Context to Native Americans,” at the International Journal of Arts and Sciences’ Multidisciplinary Conference at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, May 27-31, 2012.
Dr. Bob Roggio participated in the 2012 International Intercollegiate Programming Contest (World Finals) in Warsaw, Poland in early June where 112 three-person programming teams from college and universities around the world pitted their skills in an intense five-hour programming contest. The 2012 contest was hosted by the University of Warsaw and was sponsored by IBM, Several levels of competition (area, region, and continent) starting with over twenty-five thousand students leads to the final 112 teams. Next year the contest will be held in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Dr. Karthikeyan Umapathy presented his findings from the Digging into Human Rights Violations research project in a panel presentation to faculty and students of Faculty of Information and Media Studies at Western University, London, Canada. Dr. Umapathy also took part in series of meetings with experts from Western University on the topic of natural language processing, computational linguistics, machine learning, visual analytics, and user-centered systems design.
Dr. Karthikeyan Umapathy was recognized as one of the 2012 “Movers and Shakers” of Northeast Florida by the Indo-US Chamber of Commerce of Northeast Florida for his contributions to the entrepreneurial community. Dr. Umapathy was presented with “Movers and Shakers 2012” plaque during the Indo-US Chamber Annual Gala Fair on June 2, 2012.
Civil Engineering students won big in the “Big Beam” design contest sponsored by the Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) and SIKA Corporation. Two Prestressed Concrete Beams were designed by UNF Civil Engineering students. Gate Precast fabricated the beams and donated them to UNF. The beams were tested in the UNF lab and test results were forwarded to PCI headquarters for competition evaluation. UNF won first place in zone 6 and ranked fourth overall in the national competition. The Dr. Adel El Safty served as the faculty advisor for this event.
