STEM Jumpstart Experience 2016

What is the STEM Jumpstart Experience

The STEM Jumpstart Experience is a four-week, grant funded program that will introduce you to a cohort of other like-minded students, allow you to become comfortable on our campus, and introduce you to faculty who will be available to mentor you throughout your years at UNF.  The program is an "invitation only" program and is free of tuition to invitees.

It is designed as an intensive update and preparation for the mathematics class that is the foundation course you will take this fall. The STEM Jumpstart Experience Intensive Math Program will work with students to be sure you are ready for Calculus in the fall because this is a critical course for many of the STEM majors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible for the STEM Jumpstart Experience?

If you are eligible for the STEM Jumpstart Experience, you should have received an email directing you to this website as well as a letter. If you HAVE NOT received such communication, please contact the program coordinator at <stem-jumpstart@unf.edu> to confirm your eligibility.

I believe I will place in Calculus – Should I take the program?

Many students come to UNF anticipating that they will begin by taking Calculus, however, at UNF we determine your level of math preparation via your UNF math placement taken at orientation and any college math credit you may have earned while in high school.  History shows that only approximately 25% of the entering freshman class in any given year actually place into Calculus I. Students who, based on their math placement scores, must first take Pre-Calculus, may face a one-year delay in graduation in some programs.

If you have received the invitation letter/email for the STEM Jumpstart Experience, and have not completed college math credit placing you into Calculus, we believe you could benefit from the Jumpstart Experience.  If you are not certain, contact one of the freshman academic advisors at 904-620-1012 and they can inform you of which math course you would place into based on your UNF Math Placement scores. In addition, the UNF Orientation Office has a math placement score chart on their website, see
https://www.unf.edu/orientation/freshmen/Placement_Exam_-_Math.aspx

If you have received the invitation letter/email for the STEM Jumpstart Experience, but scored a 3 or higher on your AP Calculus exam, you are already considered Calculus ready and do not need to participate in this program.

If the program is free of tuition, why must I pay a $50 deposit to register?

The invitation only intensive math portion of the program has room for only 70 individuals. There are over 1000 individuals who meet the requirements and have been invited to participate. The 70-seats will be filled on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Therefore, when you register, you will be asked to provide a $50 deposit via credit card or ACH (electronic check) that will be applied toward your UNF Fall tuition if you register and attend. We are doing this to minimize the number of individuals who register and do not attend because this could prevent others who want to attend from registering.

What if I need to live too far away to commute to the daily activities?

Staying at UNF is not required for this program.  However, If you live too far away to commute to the daily activities, we have made arrangements for students to live on campus during the program. The cost of room and board would run between $800 to $1200 for the four week period depending on the meal plan and dormitory selected. There are a limited number of grants to help defray the cost of housing for participants. When you register for the STEM Jumpstart Experience, you will be asked if you need housing. If you say yes, your name will be forwarded to Campus Housing and you will be contacted by them to make arrangements. You will also be asked if you want to apply for a grant. If you say yes, your application will be automatically entered into the grant process. Grants will be based on the limited funds available and student financial need as determined from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSFA) that you submitted to Financial Aid. If you have not submitted a FAFSA, you will not be eligible for a housing grant.

How will housing grants for the program be determined?

If you say yes, your application will be automatically entered into the grant process. Grants will be based on the limited funds available and student financial need as determined from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSFA) that you submitted to Financial Aid. If you have not submitted a FAFSA, you will not be eligible for a housing grant.

What is the STEM Living-Learning Community (STEM LLC)?

The STEM Living-Learning Community (STEM LLC) is available for STEM students during the fall and spring semester of their first year at UNF.  The community connects first-year students interested in pursuing a degree or career in the sciences, technology, engineering and math.  The living-learning community will intentionally develop students’ academic and professional skills, preparing them to succeed in their chosen career and socially at UNF. As a participant in the STEM LLC, a student can expect to...

• Develop an understanding of academic requirements needed to pursue a major in a science, technology, engineering or math field

• Interact with faculty, staff, field professionals and students inside and outside the classroom

• Explore professions and resources both within and outside of the UNF community

The deadline to sign up for the STEM LLC is July 1.  For more information on the STEM LLC, including applicant requirements, go to: http://www.unf.edu/housing/llc/S_T_E_M_.aspx

How should I approach scheduling my orientation given the timing of UNF’s STEM Jumpstart Experience?

It is incredibly important that you participate in an orientation session prior to the start of the Jumpstart Program. We have worked closely with the Orientation Office to reserve space for you in either our June 30 - July 31 orientation session or in our July 7th-8th orientation session. You can register for your orientation session by going through your MyWings portal and selecting one of these two dates.
