Co-op/Internship Opportunities

What is a Co-operative education?

Co-operative education (or "co-op") is a unique educational program in which students integrate classroom study with paid, supervised work experience related to their engineering studies. UNF engineering students work part-time for 15-20 hours per week while enrolled in classes.

Why Co-op?

  • Explore career interests and work environments and clarify career goals.
  • Enhance classroom learning through practical experience gained in a professional environment.
  • Receive constructive supervision, challenging tasks, and accurate evaluations.
  • Receive training and utilize emerging technologies in the workplace.
  • Secure job opportunities at higher salaries upon graduation.
  • Develop professional relationships.

How do I apply?

Contact the CCEC Co-op Coordinator to begin the process:

Rebecca Kuca (904) 620-2955 Rebecca.Kuca@unf.edu

Who is eligible to apply for Co-op?

You must be admitted as a degree seeking student and be officially accepted in to an engineering program and have completed six hours of engineering coursework. In addition, you must have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5.

How are students selected?

After the Co-op Coordinator has determined eligibility, student resumes are referred to employers. Employers then contact students to arrange interviews during the semester prior to beginning their co-op assignments.

Some students locate their own co-op employers. These positions must be evaluated for approval as a co-op site.

Acceptance into the Co-op Program does not guarantee placement in to a co-op position. The decision to hire is made by employers through a competitive hiring process.

Students who accept co-op employment offers complete a Participation Agreement and enroll in the appropriate co-op course (CGN 4949, EEL 4949, or EML 4949). Co-op credit may be used for elective credit in some programs of study; otherwise Co-op credit is additive credit. The co-op work term is noted on the student's transcript along with other courses.

What is an internship?

Internships are paid career-related experiences that are agreed upon between the student and the employer. There is no supervision from UNF and the student is not enrolled in a co-op course (however, an evaluation may be requested by the College). There is no record of this employment on the student's transcripts. The Co-op Coordinator may assist in locating internships.
