- In accordance with the University Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures, the School of Computing will have a Promotion and Tenure
Committee to recommend to the Director of the School of Computing on matters of promotion and tenure. The Promotion and Tenure Committee for
the School of Computing will be made up of tenured members of the School subject to the following restrictions:
- A candidate for promotion will not participate in any committee promotion deliberations, or formal votes on promotion.
- A committee member may only participate in formal votes on promotions which are to a rank less than or equal to his/hers.
- The Director of the School or College Dean is not eligible to serve on the Committee.
- The Committee will annually elect its own chairperson.
- The Committee will consider revisions to the School of Computing's Promotion and Tenure Guidelines every two years.
Proposed changes shall be presented to the School membership in writing, at least one week prior to the meeting at
which they are to be considered. Eligible School of Computing faculty (those who are tenured or tenure-earning) must approve any
revisions by a majority vote.
- The Committee will conduct deliberations on candidates for promotion and/or tenure in absolute confidentiality. There will be
no discussions of committee proceedings, decisions, or discourse outside of the Committee, except as conducted by the Committee
Chairperson with the Candidate and the Director of the School of Computing. Any such discussions by the Committee Chairperson will occur only
after conclusion of the Committee's business and will be confined to committee consensus, specifically avoiding identifying
individuals or factions within the Committee.
- For promotion, at the Candidate's request, the Committee will conduct an informal straw vote that may serve to test colleague
support for his or her candidacy. Only School of Computing faculty holding academic rank greater than or equal to the rank sought by the
Candidate will be eligible to vote. The Committee Chairperson will make the results of the straw vote known to the Candidate.
The straw vote will not otherwise be utilized in committee deliberations, will not be discussed, and will not become part of
any permanent record.
- For tenure candidates a confidential ballot will be conducted. Only tenured School of Computing faculty will be eligible to vote.
The Committee Chairperson will make the results of the vote known to the Candidate. Per University policy, the results will be
included in the Committees recommendation and the recommendation of the Director of the School of Computing.
- Committee votes regarding candidates for promotion and/or tenure will be by anonymous ballot. There will be no absentee ballots
or proxies. Aside from submitting the ballot to the Committee Chairperson, committee members will not communicate their vote in
any manner to any person. The numerical tally for all votes taken will be included in the written report to the Director of the School of Computing, as stipulated by the University Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures.
- Committee quorum will be two-thirds of the Committee membership. Final ballots on either promotion or tenure will require a
simple majority for an affirmative recommendation, the recommendation otherwise being "does not recommend at this time."
- For a promotion and/or tenure decision, the Committee Chairperson will, with the Committee's approval, submit a written report
to the Director of the School of Computing. In accordance with University Promotion and Tenure Policies and Procedures, the report shall include
an "assessment of the Candidate's qualifications and a recommendation. It shall describe the Committee's procedures, shall discuss
the Committee's analysis of the candidate's credentials with reference to both the School's and the University's P&T criteria,
shall include the results of the final vote taken by the Committee, and shall set forth a tenure and/or promotion recommendation."
For tenure candidates, the results of the poll of the tenured faculty shall also be included.
- The Committee will adhere to all established guidelines in the evaluation of a candidate, including University, College, and
School of Computing Guidelines.
