Bryan Bannon, PhD
Assistant Professor, Philosophy & Religious Studies
Bryan Bannon earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy at the
University of Memphis and joined the faculty at UNF in 2011 after teaching at
Miami University, Oglethorpe University, and Wesleyan University. His research
focuses on conceptual issues involved in environmental ethics, drawing from
resources found in 20
century European philosophy.
Dr. Bannon is interested in community based learning as a
way to teach philosophy in a more engaged and effective manner. Beginning with experiences rather than
abstract problems brings students into a more personal relationship with the
philosophical texts, showing their relevance to students’ lives.
His Community Scholars project was initially to redesign his
environmental ethics course to include CBTL elements. After accepting the position to direct the
environmental studies program at Merrimack College, those plans were revised to
include an essay focusing on how CBTL experiences can augment traditional
approaches to teaching ethics in philosophy courses. The essay can be found here.
