Christopher Brown, PhD
Associate Professor, School of Engineering
Dr. Christopher Brown earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida and practiced in the profession for 22 years before joining UNF as a full-time faculty member in 2009. In his time at UNF, Dr. Brown has used community-based transformational learning (CBTL) in several of his courses including Senior Design Capstone 1 & 2 and Sustainable Engineering Design and Field Camp.
Dr. Brown hopes to create a fully immersive CBTL environment for his engineering students because it leads to stronger academic outcomes for students, improves student retention, and helps the community - something he says universities should be taking the lead in. As a community scholar, Dr. Brown studied the use of CBTL in engineering curricula and wrote a review article of best practices in hopes of enhancing the UNF School of Engineering’s capacity to use CBTL effectively.
In 2013, Dr. Brown co-published an article in the Journal of Applied Global Research about one of his community-based engineering projects. The article is titled, The UNF Osprey Engineering Consulting Simulator - Millenial Engineering Students Involved in Community-Based Transformational Learning.
