JeffriAnne Wilder, PhD
Assistant Professor, Sociology
JeffriAnne Wilder is an Assistant Professor of Sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology, with a concentration on Women’s Studies and Gender Research from the University of Florida. Dr. Wilder is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. She completed her MA in Sociology from Cleveland State University, and her BA in 1997 from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA. She joined the UNF faculty in the fall of 2008. Her primary areas of teaching and scholarship include: colorism, race, class, and gender; feminist theory and methodology; theories of race and racism; and the sociology of higher education.
Dr. Wilder is currently the Associate Chair of the UNF Commission on Diversity and Inclusion (CODI) at UNF. As a race scholar specializing in issues of cultural diversity, Dr. Wilder aspires to make her work more accessible to UNF students and the community. In a perfect world, her approach to teaching, research and service would intersect to include community building and practice. In her mind, it makes much more sense to engage the communities we study from the perspective of a learner, rather than going into local communities with the mindset of an expert. Given that, her experience as a Community Scholar was invaluable to her professional development.
Since joining the UNF faculty, JeffriAnne has been very engaged in the Jacksonville community. She has served on the Jacksonville Community Council’s (JCCI) Race Relations Progress Report Review Committee and worked with the MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation. JeffriAnne’s partnership with the Ritz Theatre and Museum, the city’s premiere institution of African-American history, has served as her most significant community relationship. In many ways, this experience has served as the platform of her work as a Community Scholar. Dr. Wilder worked with the museum staff to develop her Black Americans course into a service-learning class (funded by the Community Scholars grant). She is currently working with the organization to develop a structured internship program which will enable UNF students to assist the museum with community research projects and with the Young Black Intellectuals, a program for 8-12th grade students centered on African-American history and culture.
