Long-term
semester exchange experiences are the best way
for students to study abroad, but some students
have families or jobs that preclude them from
going abroad for four months or more. A short-term
study abroad program, or study tour, is an innovative
alternative for students interested in shorter-term
international educational experiences.

Option 1: Short-Term Faculty-Led Study Abroad Course
A short-term faculty-led study abroad program begins with pre-trip meetings in which students learn about the country they will visit, how to behave abroad etc. Program destinations, faculty leaders and academic disciplines vary from year to year. The study tour portion of the program involves a short visit, usually 10-15 days, to the country. There, students visit businesses and may meet with civic and academic leaders. In addition, each study tour contains a significant cultural component designed to allow students to explore the unique aspects of the nation, from landmarks to museums to institutions. Upon return to the US, students create a culminating educational project, such as a paper or a presentation.
Note that some study abroad courses are restricted to certain groups of students (e.g., graduate students only, undergraduates only). Alumni and friends of the university are also invited to participate in most programs. Dates and costs for all courses are tentative, but will be finalized by late October of each year. Note that some summer trips allow students to participate in back-to-back programs with the European Business School-Paris (4-week) program (see Option 2 below), significantly decreasing the total cost by eliminating one airline ticket.
The program fee traditionally includes airfare, hotel transfers, lodging, tickets to cultural events, sightseeing trips and several group meals. Students will earn UNF credit for a short-term faculty-led study abroad course program. Students pay the program fee plus the cost of tuition. |

Option 2: Short Version of the Traditional Semester Abroad
The second type of experience is a shorter-term analog to the traditional semester abroad. We offer several four-week programs where students can study for one month in the same location. Students study in a traditional classroom setting during the week which provides the opportunity for independent travel on weekends.
If UNF students would like to study abroad on one of these shorter-term exchange programs, they pay UNF tuition to study abroad. Grades and credits are calculated as transfer credit from the exchange institution. The program fee traditionally includes room and board and airfare. (Note: Room and board costs are typically lower than in the US.) Students pay the program fee plus the cost of tuition.
