Students will read and discuss key texts that formulate the intellectual foundation of the discipline of art history. Students will begin the semester by examining art historical texts based in connoisseurship and aesthetics and will then explore methodologies used by art historians, in particular, formalism, iconographical studies, Marxism, feminism, and post-structuralism. The writers examined include JoAnn Joachim Winckelmann, Immanuel Kant, Heinrich Wolfflin, Erwin Panofsky, Meyer Schapiro, Norman Bryson, Rosalind Krauss and others. |
