UNF Community Health Internship Information

The Department of Public Health offers a program in community health that culminates in a Bachelor of Science in Health (BSH) degree. The goal of the Community Health program is to provide students with the education needed for entry-level community health positions and for graduate studies. Of major concern to any society is the health and well-being of its citizens. Although the human lifespan has increased, chronic and degenerative diseases, and continuing and emerging infectious disease and injuries are urgent problems that must be addressed. Enhancement of health at both the individual and community levels is the major focus of this program of study.

The BSH in Community Health combines a broad spectrum of liberal arts, basic sciences, social sciences and health science
core and contextual courses to prepare undergraduate students in the field of health education/health promotion. Students gain experience and skills in promoting health behaviors and preventing both chronic and infectious diseases and injury, while learning the theories and research methods necessary for the development of this field. Students may take courses related to nutrition, sexuality education, substance abuse and violence prevention, exercise science, fitness and aging. Students choose
an area of specialization (minor) in one of the following: Aging/Adult Studies, Exercise Science or Health Education

Students are encouraged to apply for membership in Eta Sigma Gamma, our National Health Education Honorary and the Student Chapter of the Florida Association of Professional Health Educators (FAPHE). Membership forms are included in both Word and PDF formats. Applications can be sent to Julie Merten, faculty sponsor.

At the completion of this degree program, students are eligible to take the national examination for certification in health education (CHES)

Community Service Internship (HSC4814)

in a health promotion/education setting. For information about the internship, please contact Ms. Julie Merten, jmerten@unf.edu or 620-4017.
