THE REHABILITATION COUNSELING PROFESSION

In providing services to individuals with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities, Rehabilitation Counselors help individuals address the personal, social, and vocational effects of their disabilities. Rehabilitation counselors interview and provide counseling to individuals with disabilities and their families. They may evaluate school and medical reports, and confer and plan with physicians and other health care providers to help individuals with disabilities achieve their vocational or independent living goals. Rehabilitation counselors assist individuals with disabilities in developing rehabilitation programs, which may be targeted toward work or toward increasing the individual's capacity to function more independently. They may arrange for medical care and vocational training, and may provide job placement to assist individuals with disabilities in establishing new careers. Although most rehabilitation counselors provide case management services, the settings in which they work frequently determine the range of services provided. It is the specialized knowledge of disability that differentiates rehabilitation counselors from other types of counselors.

THE PROGRAM:

The Rehabilitation Counseling Program combines a balance of didactic and clinical instruction with applied and experiential learning opportunities for individuals preparing for a professional career in rehabilitation counseling. Students may attend on a full-time or part-time basis. To meet the needs of individuals who are working full-time, the program is an evening program, with most classes scheduled Monday and Tuesday evenings (4:30-7:15, 7:30-10:15 PM). Students may be admitted any semester, however, Summer or Fall terms are recommended.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:

The Rehabilitation Counseling Program requires a minimum of 48 semester hours. Individuals seeking licensure as mental health counselors in Florida need at least four additional courses. Graduates receive a Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling.
