Bachelor of Science in Health (BSH)
Track: Nutrition and Dietetics
The Department of Public Health offers programs
culminating in a Bachelor of Science in Health (B.S.H.) Degree. Students
who earn the B.S.H. degree are qualified to work in a variety of community
health, business and educational organizations such as public health departments,
nursing homes/retirement residences, home health agencies, alcohol / drug
programs, wellness / fitness centers, schools, hospitals, health maintenance
organizations, medical group practices, managed care organizations and
insurance companies.
The Nutrition and Dietetics Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation
for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetics Association,
120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606-6995, 312-899-0040
ext 5400. Students wishing to become registered dietitians will also need
to complete a post-bachelors degree experience in a CADE accredited internship
program and pass a national registration exam. Internships are competitive
in nature and range from 6 months to 2 years in length. Most of these
programs require that applicants utilize a centralized computer matching
process called D&D Digital.
BSH/DPD Nutrition program students must attend a "Graduating Student"
Group Advising session to discuss the procedures for, and obtain advice
about, completing the CADE Accredited Internship applications. You may
get information about the D & D Computer Matching process from the BSH/DPD
Nutrition Program Director or D & D Digital Systems Suite 301, 304 Main
Street, Ames, IA 50010; telephone (515) 292-0490, fax (515) 663-9427,

Other Information
Students with a bachelor's degree in another subject area who wish to
complete UNF's program requirements must apply and be accepted to UNF,
meet with the Brooks College of Health Advising Office to review transcripts
and meet with Dr. Sally Weerts, the Nutrition and Dietetics Program Director,
to review any courses which may transfer as program requirements. Effective
fall 2002, all students in the UNF BSH Nutrition Program are expected
to develop a professional portfolio. Instructions for developing the portfolio
can be obtained from the Program Director. If desired, students can apply
to UNF's CADE accredited Dietetic Internship program that is affiliated
with a masters program. Successful completion of UNF's Dietetic Internship
program and the dietetic registration exam will qualify students for a
broad range of opportunities in the foods and nutrition arena.
