Prelicensure BSN Program Description & Curriculum

This track is for first-time nursing students (college juniors and above) who want to prepare for a career in nursing while earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.  Upon graduation from the program, students will sit for the NCLEX licensing exam for RNs.  The curriculum provides a strong scientific base of study with a diversity of clinical experiences and unique opportunities to work with vulnerable and underserved populations.  The curriculum is community-based in that it supports engagement with the community throughout the nursing major, nurturing and building relationships with community agencies consistently over time through an innovative home-basing of students in a designated community for the entire length of their nursing program.  Furthermore, the curriculum also provides a strong foundation for graduate study in nursing. The nursing program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Florida Board of Nursing. 

Two types of courses make up the nursing curriculum: professional courses and clinical/laboratory courses. Clinical/laboratory courses are distinguished by the C or L that follows the course number.  The nursing curriculum is a full-time course of study and follows a specific sequence:

Note:  One semester of summer study is required.  Depending on entry into the program, the summer semester will be either the first or the fifth term.

Limited Access Admission:
The Florida Board of Nursing governs the number of first-time nursing students admitted to all nursing programs in the state of Florida. UNF currently admits two groups per year with a total enrollment of 96 students—typically 48 for the summer class and 48 for the fall class. UNF abides by the following rules for limited access programs:

Students who have graduated from a Florida community college with an AA degree or those who have successfully completed 60+ semester hours of course work at a public university in Florida will receive priority for admission over other applicants.

• Selection criteria will not discriminate against Florida community college transfer students in favor of public university students who are applying for admission or who plan to continue enrollment after completion of 60 semester hours at the lower division level.
• Where necessary to achieve established equal access enrollment goals, some students may be admitted to the program using different criteria.

2008 & 2009 Prelicensure Interviews
Please note that an interview is conducted prior to admission into the Prelicensure Nursing track.  The interview is competitive and is conducted in a group setting.  There will be no change in interview dates except for extreme emergency.

2008 Prelicensure Orientation
Please note that there is a mandatory 2-day orientation (Adaptathon) for all students admitted to the Prelicensure track.
Failure to attend will result in the forfeiture of one’s seat.

Prelicensure Track FAQs

Items Required if Admitted

If admitted to the Prelicensure BSN track there will be several things required by the first day of orientation (Adaptathon):

1. Proof of current professional liability insurance (for student nurses) with $1,000,000/$3,000,000 coverage;
2. Proof of current CPR certificate for adult, child, infant, and 2-person;
3. TB skin test or chest x-ray (negative for active disease);
4. Immunization (with titer proof) against Hepatitis B;
5. Positive Varicella (chicken pox) titer (vaccine, then titer if necessary);
6. Health report indicating that there is no health condition present that would prohibit providing patient care; and
7. Background check

Note that these materials are not required to apply; rather, they are required if admitted to the program.  After receiving one’s RSVP for his/her seat in the program, the School of Nursing will mail out orientation packets.
