The School of Nursing at the Brooks College of Health offers five (5) tracks for the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), a post-MSN certificate for Family Nurse Practitioner, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).  The nursing program is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and approved by the Florida Board of Nursing.

To learn more about the track offered, please click on the track name:

Primary Care Nurse Practitioner
This track is for those individuals with a BSN who wish to become nurse practitioners skilled in meeting the healthcare needs of individuals and families across the life span.  Graduates from this track are eligible to take the Family Nurse Practitioner Certification examination and for licensure as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners.

Clinical Nurse Specialist

This track is for those individuals with a BSN who wish to develop a  concentrated area of knowledge and teach in nursing and health profession programs, healthcare institutions and agencies, and in the community.

Clinical Nurse Leader

This track is for those individuals with a BSN who wish to prepare at the graduate level to be leaders across all settings in which healthcare is delivered.  The CNL is a provider and manager of care at the point of care to individuals and cohorts or populations.  The CNL designs, implements, and evaluates care by coordinating, delegating, and supervising the care provided by the healthcare team.

Nurse Anesthetist

This track is for those individuals with a BSN who wish to study Anesthesia Nursing.  The nurse anesthetist track is an extremely rigorous academic and clinical undertaking.  It consists of a seven (7) semester continuous program of full-time graduate study.  The program is approved by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs, and graduates are eligible to take the National Certification examination to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) as well as to obtain the ARNP (in nurse anesthesia) credential from the Florida Board of Nursing.

RN-MSN Bridge

This track is designed to allow carefully selected Registered Nurses who do not possess a BSN to fast-track into the MSN program in order to become Primary Care Nurse Practitioners.  Graduates of the program are eligible to take the Family Nurse Practitioner certification examination and to apply for licensure as Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners by the Florida Board of Nursing.

FNP Certificate Program
This certificate program is for individuals who currently have a Master’s in Nursing and want to obtain a certificate which will allow them to sit for the National Certification Examination as a Family Nurse Practitioner in order to practice in that capacity.  In addition, individuals who are nationally certified as ANP, PNP, GNP, CNM and WHNP may apply for this certificate program.

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
The Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of North Florida is designed as a post-graduate degree program for those who already possess, at a minimum, a Master of Science in Nursing and specialty certification. This program is taught primarily online with two courses taught as a hybrid of online and in-person components.

Entrance Exam Requirements

Graduate Record Examination
(GRE)
The Florida Board of Education requires, as followed by the university and the School of Nursing, a composite score of 1,000 (verbal and quantitative) on the GRE.  Please refer to the UNF Graduate Catalog for additional details.  Previous scores may be submitted from ETS on behalf of the applicant. This exam is required for the 5 MSN tracks and is 1 of 2 options for the DNP track.  GRE scores are not required for the FNP Certificate track.

         GRE Webpage (ETS)

Miller Analogies Test (MAT)
Applicants to the DNP program may opt to submit MAT scores in place of GRE scores.  MAT scores are not currently considered for admission to any other graduate nursing track at UNF.

*The RN-MSN program follows the application deadlines that are established by the university; the other graduate nursing programs follow deadlines established by the School of Nursing.  It’s important for RN-MSN applicants to monitor the university’s term application deadlines at www.unf.edu under the “Prospective Students” section, as dates are subject to change without notice.

**RN-MSN candidates must be first evaluated against General Education and prerequisite requirements before a decision can be rendered; candidates are usually notified informally via email of their status with regard to these requirements.  RN-MSN candidates may be offered RN-BSN instead of RN-MSN if GPA or GRE scores do not meet requirements.  Those fully admissible are sent admission offers on a rolling basis as reviewed.

***The dates listed for the start of classes each term is the university’s official start date.  Check your personal class schedule for your actual first day of class by accessing it through the myWings portal.

Note that the deadlines for the all tracks except the RN-MSN Bridge are the same every year; the deadlines for the RN-MSN track follow the university’s term deadlines.  The application deadline is a “receive by” deadline, meaning that all materials must be received in the appropriate office by the deadline.
