Program Description
The Doctor of Nursing Practice program at the University of North Florida is designed as a post-graduate degree program for those who already possess, at a minimum, a Master of Science in Nursing and specialty certification. This program is taught primarily online with two courses taught as a hybrid of online and in-person components (Evidenced-Based Practice I and II).

Program Objectives/Graduate Learning Outcomes:
Objectives for the program are based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing essentials for Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice (2006). The program objectives build upon those for the masters in nursing program. The objectives (graduate learning outcomes) for the DNP program state that upon completion of the program the graduate will be able to:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate new practice approaches based on scientific knowledge;
  • Ensure accountability for quality care and patient safety for populations with whom they work;
  • Demonstrate analytical methodologies for the evaluation of clinical practice and the application of scientific evidence;
  • Utilize technological information systems to evaluate outcomes of care, health care delivery, and quality improvement;
  • Develop, evaluate, and provide leadership for health care policy which shapes health care financing, regulation, and delivery;
  • Work collaboratively with transdisciplinary teams to meet health care needs of individuals and populations;
  • Analyze epidemiological, biostatistical, environmental, and occupational data for the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs of clinical prevention and population health; and,
  • Base practice on the application of biophysical, psychosocial, behavioral, sociopolitical, cultural, economic, ethical and nursing science as appropriate to area of specialization.


Admission Requirements
The program will require specific admission requirements above and beyond the ones currently required by the University. Admission requirements for the DNP program include:

1.       Masters degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited program and certification in area of clinical           practice (NP, CRNA, Nursing Administration, CNS);
2.       Minimum graduate GPA of 3.30;
3.       Minimum score of 1000 on the GRE (verbal and quantitative combined) or a minimum MAT score of 410;
4.       Negative background check and negative drug screening (required only upon admission);
5.       Hold an active license as a registered nurse or advanced practice registered nurse in the jurisdiction in           which you practice;
6.       A portfolio to include 7 items (format directions below):
  
a.     Current resume or curriculum vitae;
b.     Statement describing your educational preparation;
c.     Description of past clinical experiences including role and function;
d.     Identification of scholarly endeavors;
e.     Description of professional and community activities;
f.      Statement identifying a clinical question arising from your current nursing practice environment         regarding something that you believe needs to change or improve.  Briefly discuss the         background of the issue or clinical question/problem in your current nursing practice environment         and identify the population and desired outcomes, as well as potential interventions;
g.     Copy of current nursing license and certification in practice area; and
7.       Three (3) letters of reference, which address academic ability and clinical skills.

Do not submit materials to the School of Nursing.
 Transcripts, GRE/MAT scores, and reference letters should arrive at the Graduate School under separate cover as sealed, official documents.  The portfolio should be submitted in a ½” – 1” 3-ring binder to include a Table of Contents and labeled, divided sections.  Your name should appear in the header on every page of the portfolio.  Please number the pages in sections that include more than one page.

How to apply
There is no separate application to the Nursing programs at UNF; apply using the steps that follow:

     2. Graduate Student Update Form (for returning applicants/students)

All applicants are responsible for ensuring that applications, necessary application fees, transcripts, test scores, and supplemental materials are submitted directly to the UNF Graduate School at 1 UNF Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32224.  Receipt of materials may be verified with the Graduate School at 904.620.1360.  All materials must be received by the application deadline for consideration.  Do not submit materials to the School of Nursing unless requested to do so please.

Note that effective immediately for applications to any nursing program. A valid, current email address must be provided when completing the application form.  Current UNF students will only be contacted at their school email accounts.  Transfers will be contacted at the email address provided on the application since UNF email accounts are not generated until admission is granted.  For written applications please use clear, large print to avoid errors. We will contact applicants regarding missing application items at the email address on file.  Official decision letters will go via US Postal Service.

Graduation from the program will be contingent on the student completing all the requirements of the program, including the Doctoral project and the Residency in Advanced Nursing Practice. In addition all students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
