What We Do
Our goal is to provide targeted women and girls’ health education to the greater Jacksonville community.  We educate the community using the wealth of knowledge and expertise of our members and community health partners. We do this in two ways:

  • Educational Lecture Series – we provide free educational presentations to any community organization on a variety of health topics. Each March, we hold our Annual Education Event featuring a renowned speaker on a relevant health issue. This event is our only fundraiser to help endow a research professorship.
  • Endowing a Research Professor – We are nearing our goal of endowing a professorship in the UNF Brooks College of Health. This expert will conduct research and education in girls’ and women’s health for the benefit of our community.

2008 Annual Luncheon and Lecture Series

Featuring Olympic Gymnast Shannon Miller

Annual Luncheon with Shannon Miller Raises nearly $50,000

Nearly 600 people were present to hear Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller speak about the importance of healthy lifestyle choices.  Miller, a new Jacksonville resident, is the most decorated American gymnast and a strong advocate for combating childhood obesity.  This marked the 5th year of the event, which is part of the   Women & Girls Health Initiative’s Annual Lecture Series.
“We will never succeed in taking care of those we love until we take care of ourselves,” Miller said.  She opened talking about the staggering statistics that define the childhood obesity epidemic and emphasized the need for us all to be role models to children and others.  “Children do what we do, not what we say.”

The week prior to the luncheon, Miller visited the UNF campus to speak to students in the Exercise Science, Community Health, and Nutrition programs.  She hosted a Question & Answer session to a packed lecture hall.  Questions ranged from inquiries about pressures faced being a child celebrity to Shannon’s workout habits to her involvement on the Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness.
The luncheon raised over $46,000 for the  Women & Girls Health Initiative. The purpose of  is to financially support the programs of UNF’s Brooks College of Health and to provide targeted women and girls’ health education to the greater Jacksonville community.  Funds raised will endow a research professorship focused on women and girls health within the Brooks College of Health.

Special thanks to our Annual Event Committee and the wonderful community partners who made this possible:
