Areas of Expertise

As an educator, scholar, and activist, I often draw on my experiences growing up in northern England, and living in Japan, to inform how I think about my research; I endeavor to fuse the theoretical with the practical, drawing on praxis to engage, educate, and inspire. Over the past three years, my research interests have focused on (1) service-learning in teacher education programs (2) working with marginalized families and preschool children and, (3) examining quality in preschools in Florida. I investigate the intersection of culture, ethnicity and perception, and its implication for identity development and educational attainment. I am particularly interested in service-learning, and the impact it has when used in teacher education programs in the United States and in the United Kingdom as well as examining aspects of quality and accreditation in preschools in Florida.

Praxeological learning, action research, theories of social justice and social learning, conceptions of ethnic minority children learning styles, and theories of preschool quality inform my research. Even more important, my research is guided by the principal that socio-cultural and historical context are important in the study of these phenomenon. To this end, I use both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies in my research.
