Physical Education

Biography

I am a physical educator who is passionate about movement. I believe that school-based physical education is a critical component of youth's motor, cognitive, social, and emotional development and it is this belief that drives all my professional endeavors. In 2001 I earned a Bachelors degree in Physical Education from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. After that I spent ten years teaching K-12 Physical Education at Our Lady of Mercy School, an American school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  In 2009 I earned a Masters degree in Education from Framingham State University with emphasis on international education. In 2011 I decided I wanted to become a teacher educator and embraced the journey of a doctoral program. In May of 2014 I earned a Ph.D. in Coaching and Teaching Studies from West Virginia University. As a faculty at University of North Florida, I look forward to encouraging physical educators to compel children and adolescents into active lifestyles through joyful, successful, and meaningful movement experiences. My research interests include: school-based physical activity initiatives aiming at increasing opportunities for children and adolescents to be physically active, b) issues in physical education teacher education, and c) inclusion of individuals with disabilities in physical activity and sports.
