Biography

Dr. Humphrey grew up in Amarillo, Texas, where she learned American Sign Language (ASL)  through interaction with members of the Deaf community.
She has worked as an interpreter for more than 50 years and holds national certification in the U.S. (CSC, NIC-A, SC:L) and Canada (COI - now expired).
Jan earned a doctorate degree in Education and Curriculum, holds a Specialist Certificate: Legal  (2006), National Interpreting Certificate: Advanced (2003) and Comprehensive Skills Certificate (RID – 1978; 1983). She is a video producer, author, as well as an internationally renowned and engaging presenter. Since 1979, Dr. Humphrey has also worked as an interpreter educator in Texas, Kansas, California, and British Columbia. She is currently a faculty member at the University of North Florida and teaches courses in the graduate and undergraduate programs in ASL/English interpreting. Prior to this move in 2011, she worked in Seattle, WA (2002-2011) where she was involved in community and video interpreting, as well as a consultant and sign language specialist.

Dr. Humphrey has held numerous positions with professional interpreter and interpreter education organizations, including: President    Washington State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, 2008 – 2010; Professional Standards Committee Chair -- Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI) —1999 – 2001; Secretary — Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada (AVLIC) — 1994-96;  President — Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) —1989-91;  President — Conference of Interpreter Trainers (CIT) —1981-86. 

Affiliations

Dr. Humphrey is the Immediate Past President of the Washington State Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. She is also a featured member of Biltmore Who’s Who for 2010-2011, was Cambridge Who’s Who of Executives, Professionals, and Entrepreneurs in 2008-2009, and Madison Who’s Who of Professionals in 2007-2008.
