Banner and myWings Explained

There are three pieces that make up Banner and myWings.  Each piece has a slightly different purpose and function.

myWings is the UNF portal.  According to the dictionary, a portal is a "door or gateway". That is the purpose of our portal services.  When you log into myWings it provides a gateway to other web services.  Two of those are Internet Native Banner (INB) and Banner Self-Service (BSS).  While these two services are possibly the most frequently used, the portal provides access to other services as well.  For example, the Online Business Center (for credit card payments) is also there.  You now also have the ability to get to your UNF email and Skillport training programs through myWings.  Future options may include  more immediate access to some functions now found in BSS.

When you click on the myWings "Employee" tab and then on "Employee Self Service" you are entering Banner Self-Service.  Generally speaking, BSS is designed for individual functions or specific areas.  The employee information you see is yours.  Faculty work with their individual class rosters using Faculty Self-Service.  Finance managers work with data for the department that they service using Finance Self-Service.  Students can register themselves and see their own grades using Student Self-Service.  Because it requires no special software, BSS can be used from any machine that can access the myWings portal.

With some exceptions, like purchasing requisitions,  Internet Native Banner is designed for individuals whose use of Banner is more global in nature.  The Controller's Office processes financial transactions for the whole university.  The HR and Payroll operations use INB to process payroll for all employees.  Enrollment Services uses INB to work with student records for all students.  While INB does provide access using a web browser, it does require additional software be installed on the computer to work with the browser.  This software is called a "Java Plug-in".  It is installed once, the first time you go into Banner, but you must have the proper security on the computer for it to install.
