Punica granatum

Flowering pomegranate
Family Lythraceae (Punicaceae)
Description:
Only two species of Punica
are native to western Asia and north Africa. Pomogranate
is widely cultivated as a fruiting shrub or small tree. A few cultivars have
been selected for their large, colorful flowers. Summer flowers are produced on
new growth and may be yellow, orange or pink. Fruits of the flowering cultivars
are edible but usually relatively small. Typically shrubby, they can grow into
small, deciduous trees.
Pomogranate fruit is eaten out of hand or juiced. Grenadine
is made from pomogranate juice.
