Description:

Only two species of Punica are native to western Asia and north Africa. Pomogranate is widely cultivated as a fruiting shrub or small tree. A few cultivars have been selected for their large, colorful flowers. Summer flowers are produced on new growth and may be yellow, orange or pink. Fruits of the flowering cultivars are edible but usually relatively small. Typically shrubby, they can grow into small, deciduous trees.

Pomogranate fruit is eaten out of hand or juiced. Grenadine is made from pomogranate juice.

Size:

Large shrub or small tree to about fifteen feet tall.

Care Instructions:

Light: full sun to part shade

Water: well-drained soil, very drought tolerant once established

Soil: well-drained soil, grows well in an alkaline soil

In north Florida, pomegranate grows well in a well-drained soil in sun or part-shade.
