Description:

The attenuata holly is a hybrid between two holly species that are native to Florida, the dahoon holly and the America holly. Several cultivars exist with slight variations. The hybrid is a vigorous, adaptable garden plant. The hybrids have become so popular in local nurseries and gardens that they have replaced the two parent species. This plant begins life with an upright, conical canopy that becomes rounded with age. Like its parents, the bright red fruits of seed-bearing plants are colorful in winter. Fruits are a valuable wildlife food.

Trees to twenty-five feet tall or more.

Care Instructions:

Light: full sun to part shade

Water: drought tolerant when established, may benefit from irrigation during drought

Soil: very adaptable, no special requirements

Cultivar named ‘East Palatka’ and ‘Savannah’ are the most common varieties in this area. They are easy, reliable plants for north Florida gardens.
