College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) Requirement Exemption

The Board of Governors requires students to satisfy the College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirement in order to be awarded a Baccalaureate degree within  the State University System.

The CLAS requirement consists of four areas of proficiency: essay, English language skills, reading, and mathematics.

English Exemption

To satisfy the CLAS requirement essay, English language skills and reading proficiencies at UNF,one of the following methods may be used to satisfy the requirement:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in six semester hours with a combination of at least one (1) course with the ENC profex and any other course that is designated as a Gordon Rule writing course, excluding course with the SPC prefix.
  • An English score of 21 or above on the Enhanced ACT to satisfy English language skills and essay; and a reading score of 22 or above on the Enhanced ACT to satisfy reading
  • 500 or above on the Verbal section of the SAT-1 taken prior to March 2005; or 500 or above on the SAT Reasoning Test Writing portion taken after February 2005.

Process for Course Exemptions:

Find all UNF and transfer equivalent courses in a student’s record at the undergraduate level where the credit hours earned is greater than zero, the grade begins with A, B, or C, and one of the following is true:

  • Prefix of at least one course is ENC.
  • Any other course designated as a Gordon Rule wrting course, excluding courses with the SPC prefix.

Ensure that one of the courses in the list generated above has a prefix of ENC.

If so, check each of the other courses, one-by-one, to see if the hours earned plus the hours earned in ENC1101 totals six or more and the combined GPA of the pair is equal to or greater than 2.5 (the GPA calculation is rounded to two decimal places). If so, the student receives the exemption.

Process for Test Score Exemptions:

The process selects degree-seeking undergraduate students who have an active General Student record (SGASTN) who have not already satisfied all parts of the CLAS requirement.  The student’s test scores for SAT and ACT are processed to see if they meet the requirement for exemption.  If the test scores do meet the requirement, then a record is inserted or updated on the Academic Non-Course (SHANCRS) form with the appropriate score for exemption.

Math exemption

To satisfy the CLAS requirement for the mathematics proficiency at UNF,  one of the following methods may be used to satisfy the requirement:

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale in six semester hours of the following:
    • Any MAC course with the last three digits of 102 or higher
    • MGF X106 Liberal Arts Mathematics I
    • MGF X107 Liberal Arts Mathematics II
    • MGF X113 Topics in College Mathematics I
    • MGF X114 Topics in College Mathematics II
    • MGF X118 Mathematics for CLAST Review
    • Any MGF course with the last three digits of 202 or higher
    • Any Gordon Rule statistics course
    • Any mathematics course that has College Algebra as a prerequisite
  • SAT-1 quantitative score of 500 or above
  • A mathematics score of 21 or above on the Enhanced ACT

Process for Course Exemptions:

Find all UNF and transfer equivalent courses in a student’s record at the undergraduate level where the credit hours earned is greater than zero, the grade begins with A, B, or C, and one of the following is true:

  • Any MAC course with the last three digits of 101 or higher.
  • Any MGF course with the last three digits of 202 or higher.
  • The course number is MGFX106, MGFX107, MGFX113, MGFX114, or MGFX118.
  • Any Gordon Rule (attribute of GMAT) statistics course (subject code is STA).
  • Any Gordon Rule (attribute of GMAT) course for transfer courses

Processing the list in grade value order (best to worst) check to see if any two adjacent courses yield an hours earned sum of six or more and the combined GPA of the pair is equal to or greater than 2.5 (the GPA calculation is rounded to two decimal places).

College Placement Test Exemption

To satisfy the CLAS requirement using the College Placement test, the student must achieve the following scores associated with the CLAS requirement area:

  • English, Essay - score greater than or equal to 105
  • Math - score greater than or equal to 91
  • Reading - score greater than or equal to 93

The process selects all College Placement Tests from the Test Score Information (SOATEST) form with an activity date greater than or equal to the last time the process was executed for students who have not yet satisfied the CLAS requirement.  If the student's test scores meet the above requirements, then the CLAS exemption is entered on the Academic Non-Course (SHANCRS) form.  The exemption scores are entered on the Test Score Information (SOATEST) form.  An email is sent to the appropriate distribution list letting them know that a file is available containing a list of students who were processed.
