Learning for a Lifetime Program
What is it?

The Learning for a Lifetime (LFL) program was designed to promote the increasing desire for knowledge among experienced citizens of the First Coast community. The only thing you’ll need to take part is a desire to have fun and possibly (probably) learn something new. The LFL program allows qualified individuals to audit college-level courses free of charge.

How do I qualify for the LFL program?

The LFL program is open to any and all individuals aged 60 or more. Students who have not yet reached their 60th birthday may enroll in courses by paying the current tuition and fees. Students of all educational backgrounds are eligible.

How do I get started?
Just complete the form titled, "Learning for a Lifetime Application" and return it to the Office of Admissions prior to course registration.

If you would like an application mailed to you or if you have questions, please contact Admissions at (904) 620-5555 or email admissions@unf.edu, or write to the following address.

What does it mean to "audit" a course?
From time to time students enroll in courses in order to gain a specific skill or to broaden and deepen their knowledge of a particular subject -- in other words, the experience, not the grade, is the primary goal.

When you audit a course, you gain that knowledge that you were seeking, but you don’t receive credit for the course. Of course, doing the readings and homework help you gain a better understanding of the subject matter, but you’re not being graded on your performance. Students in the LFL program may audit courses on a space available basis free of charge. Students wishing to earn college credit will be required to pay tuition and fees.

When does it start?
Classes start three times a year -- in late August (the fall term); in early January (the spring term); and early May (the summer term).

The fall term concludes in early December. The spring term ends in late April or early May, and the summer term ends in late July or early August. There will be a short orientation session held prior to each semester.

What kinds of classes are offered?
Fun ones.

As a student in the LFL program, you’ll be eligible to register for all kinds of classes -- from courses in the fine arts and humanities to foreign languages or computer sciences.

Basically, if it’s something that you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t afford the time or money, now is your chance. Staff members will be available to assist LFL students in choosing and registering for classes.

Who teaches these classes?

UNF’s full and part-time faculty members will teach these courses.

What are these classes like?
The courses are college-level courses taught on a regular basis. You’ll likely be sitting in the class with a wide variety of students. From a traditional freshman student to an active retiree, the class is a good representation of our community.

Classes may be scheduled to meet only once per week, or as many as three times a week during a regular semester. Classes may start as early as 7:00 a.m. or as late as 7:30 p.m., and some are offered on the weekend or online.
