2008-2009

Obama's First 100 Days in Office

During this event the first few months of the President's term in office was discussed. Mr. Shannon Ogden, First Coast News, moderated this discussion. Panelists included the Honorable Kevin Hyde, City Councilman; Chris Hand, attorney with Terrell and Hogan; Shannon Hewett, a lobbyist with Southern Strategy Group; and Johnathan Howe, retired Four-Star United States Navy Admiral.

Rally in Tally

Students travelled to Tallahassee, Florida to participate in a rally for support for higher education at the Florida Capitol. This event was sponsored by Student Government.

The Outlook for Success in Iraq and Afghanistan

This lecture was given by Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, assistant to the President and deputy national security advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan. This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

Building Better Communities – A Community Change Toolkit

Jacksonville Community Council, Inc. (JCCI) executive director Skip Cramer shared community improvement strategies and discussed the critical role that citizens play in American Democracy at the local level.

Read Across America

The National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. At UNF students had the opportunity volunteer to read to approximately 600 children who visited the UNF campus from local schools and early learning centers.

Our Economic Challenges: What Can the New President Do?

This discussion was focused on the current economic crisis and strategies for improving our nation's economic outlook. The panel was be moderated by Dr. Parvez Ahmed, and featured Dr. Sidney Rosenberg, Dr. Paul Mason, and Dr. David Jaffee.

Policy Options for the Obama Administration on the Financial and Economic Crisis

This lecture was given by Steven Weisman, chief international economics correspondent of the New York Times. This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

C-SPAN Campaign 2008 Bus Tour

The C-SPAN Bus was on the UNF campus to discuss the media, C-SPAN, TV production and public affairs with students, faculty and the public. The bus was open for tours and on-site interviews were conducted with students for their C-SPAN youtube site.

Celebrate Inauguration Day at the UNF Library

Students, faculty members, and staff gathered at the UNF Library to watch the Presidential Inauguration on the big screen. Light refreshments were served. Click here to view a clip of this event.

"The Political Outlook" Lecture by David Brooks

David Brooks, author and New York Times Columnist, gave a lecture on the political outlook after the November elections. This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

Post-Election Panel Discussion

This discussion was centered on a re-cap of the 2008 presidential election, what we can expect from the new Administration, and what we will see from the President in his first 100 days. The panel was moderated by Dr. Paul Harwood, Assistant Professor of Political Science. Guest panelists included Dr. Matthew Corrigan, Department of Political Science and Public Administration Chair, Dr. Henry Thomas, Associate Professor of Political Science, and Mr. Bruce Hamilton, WJXT Channel 4.

Race, Class, and Gender in the 2008 Election

Students, faculty, and staff were invited to engage in a local dialogue sparked by a series of national conversations about the dynamics of race, class and gender in the 2008 Presidential Election. This event was sponsored by the Department of Sociology & Anthropology, the UNF Women’s Center, the Intercultural Center for PEACE, and the American Democracy Project.

Election 2008 Debate

The American Democracy Project Steering Committee is sponsored an election debate, moderated by President John Delaney. Mr. Kevin Hyde, Jacksonville City Council Member, represented Senator McCain; Mr. Chris Hand, an Attorney with Terrell and Hogan, represented Senator Obama.

Film Screening: Flight From Death

This film uncovers death anxiety as a possible root cause of many of our behaviors on a psychological, spiritual, and cultural level. After the film, a presentation was given by producer Greg Bennick, as well as a presentation by Sheldon Solomon, the social psychologist featured in the film.

"The Way We Will Be" Lecture by John Zogby

Zogby is the president and CEO of Zogby International. He has conducted polls and focus groups around the world, though he has gained the most publicity for his polls of U.S. presidential elections. This event was sponsored by the UNF Foundation and the World Affairs Council.

"Creating the Ideal President: Unlocking the Meaning in Candidate Framing"

In this presentation Dr. John Parmelee, Associate Professor of Communication, examined candidate framing in the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections and how viewers interpret that framing.

Face-To-Face Event with Former Senator Bob Graham

Students had the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with Senator Bob Graham about the American presidency and the upcoming election.

Project Vote Smart

Project Vote Smart is a non-partisan, non-profit, voter education organization. They provide information on presidential candidates such as campaign finance records, State and Federal Key Votes, and Speeches. This national bus tour is stopped at UNF to provide students with voter education.

Evoking Rights Film Screening

This documentary film, produced by Dr. Jillian Smith and her students, features President John Delaney and other members of the UNF campus community answering the question, "What does rights means to you." Students, faculty, and staff were able to stop in to the University Gallery to view this film.

Capitol Steps Pre-Show Patriotic Jamboree

A Pre-show Patriotic Jamboree was held on the front porch of the Fine Arts Center. The event featured voter registration, food, music, and activities.

Distinguished Voices Lecture: "The Arab-Isreali Conflict"

Martin Indyk, Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy, presented a lecture on the Arab-Isreali conflict. This event was sponsored by the World Affairs Council.

Voter Registration Drive

Faculty members were encouraged to distribute voter registration forms to thier students during the first week of the semester.

 

2007-2008

Tour of the Florida Times Union

Students were able to learn about how politicians are covered in the media and tour the Florida Times Union Facility.

Tour of Jacksonville City Hall

Students were given the opportunity to learn about local government by meeting with city council members, attending a City Council Meeting, and touring City Hall.

National and Global Youth Service Day

Several service activity stations were set up on the UNF Green, and in front of the UNF library including: Hope for the Homeless, Civic Engagement, Elderly Outreach, Food for the Famished, Kids Korner, and Great American Bake Sale. Students were able to learn that in just 5 minutes they could make a difference!

Film Screening: "Does the Media Turn Off Young Voters?"

Students in Marcia Ladendorff's course Media Literacy: Campaign Edition travelled to Washington, DC during Spring Break and created short films centered on the questions: What is the impact of media on the political process? Does that impact result in apathy amongst young people toward politics?

Panel Discussion: "Do You Know What's in Your Public Records?"

This panel discussion explored the freedom of information in government. The panelists included Mr. Joe Adams, author of the Florida Public Records Handbook, Ms. Barbara Petersen, President of the First Amendment Foundation in Tallahassee, and Ms. JoAnn Carrin, Office of Open Government in Tallahassee.

UNF Voices Forum: "Who Holds the Power in American Democracy?"

Students, faculty, staff, and community members joined in on this critical discussion on the role of the individual in our representative democracy. Guest speakers included Duval County Supervisor of Elections, Jerry Holland, and Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Administration, Dr. Kyle Scott. The UNF Voices Forum was established by students representing various UNF student organizations such as Critical Minds, Project Affect, Americans for Informed Democracy, Students Without Borders, and the Progressive Action Committee.

Sunshine Week Audit Committee

The Sunshine Week Audit Committee was made up of students, faculty, and staff interested in the open access to information in government. Dr. Berrin Beasley, Associate Professor of Communication, trained the committee on how to request public documents and gave an overview of the Sunshine law and its importance. Committee members then were able to choose an issue of interest to them and request public records related to issue. Students visited public agencies (such as City Hall) and requested the records as a test of agency compliance with Chapter 119 of Florida statutes.

Jacksonville Week in Review

Students sat in on a taping of the show Jacksonville Week in Review, a weekly broadcast produced by WJCT on issues of the day in Jacksonville. Students were able to view the television production process as well as discuss challenges facing the Jacksonville community with participants of the show. This program gave students insight into the media as well as how civil discourse is conducted.

Jacksonville Day at the Capitol

Jacksonville Day at the Florida Capitol, Thursday, January 24, 2008. UNF students were apart of the Jacksonville delegation to the State Capitol along with members of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. Students met with state legislators, attended a Higher Education Appropriations Committee meeting, and participated in a private tour of the governor's mansion.

TLO Trip to Washington

Ambassador Nancy Soderberg led a group of 22 students on a transformational learning opportunity to Washinton, DC where they had the opportunity to discuss their policy paper with top governmental officials. Click the link above to view an article from the Spinnaker about this trip.

Mock Political Convention

UNF students participated as delegates and volunteers in this two-day Mock Convention along with students from Duval County High Schools, EWC, JU, and FCCJ. Students decided on party platforms and candidates for Democrat and Republican parties. This event was sponsored by Supervisor of Elections Office. Lecture: "Technology: Threat to Democracy?"

Documentary Film: "Evoking Rights"

Dr. Jillian Smith and her students interviewed and filmed several “UNF voices” asking them what rights means to them. The students created documentary text pictures that illustrate rights gone wrong or rights gone right. This film was shown in the UNF Gallery and the pictures were displayed on the walls in the UNF Gallery as well.

Constitution Day 2006

A debate was held between a representative from the ACLU and a UNF professor on Executive Powers. Pocket-sized Constitutions were given out at the debate.

New York Times Readership Program

300 papers were distributed each day. The newspapers were incorporated in to the Writing Program. The general student body could pick up the newspapers at various locations around campus.
