College and Departmental Opportunities for Transformational Learning

Department of Psychology

What internship, fieldwork, service learning, and/or practicum opportunities are available in your program?

For undergraduates, the course PSY4945, 1-3 credits, is offered each term . In recent semesters, Dr . Marcon has enrolled a number of students (approx 20) in this Practicum “course” and the students work under her supervision and her grant to carry out assessments of local pre-school children, including some who are participants in Head Start. In Fall, one additional undergraduate student was registered for Practicum with Dr. Herkov.

What opportunities are available for undergraduate research or creative projects in your program?

Undergraduate students work on research by registering for PSY3911, Supervised Research, for PSY4904, Honors Research, and, in some cases, for PSY4906, Directed Independent Study . Students who register for PSY4906 typically have their efforts culminate in an Honors Thesis. Students who are registered for PSY3911 and/or 4906 work with one of the faculty and, on some occasions, their contribution warrants being listed as co-author on a paper or publication . In the Fall, 2006 semester, a total of eight students were enrolled in PSY3911, seven in PSY4904, and two in PSY4906.

What study abroad opportunities are available in your department?

This Spring term Drs . Richard and Wang will have approximately 20 students enrolled in their PSY2930, Beyond War course that will involve travel by half the students to Japan and the remaining half to China. This will be supported by a TLO grant and was initially to be an Honors course but because of its failure to be included in the Honors listings, is being offered under a PSY2930, Special Topics number.

Dr . Güss and Dr. Tuason have also received funding for a future course that will involve student travel to Europe.

What other transformational and experiential learning opportunities exist for your students?

For many years Psychology faculty have often involved undergraduates in research projects and/or service efforts and a lab suite in our new building space is designated for priority use by undergraduate and graduate students in completing thesis and other research projects. The Psychology Club and Psi Chi have been collecting toys to supply to needy children . Annually Dr . Marcon supervises students who gather food for distribution at Thanksgiving to needy families.
