What internship, fieldwork, service learning, and/or practicum opportunities are available in your program?

Various religious studies courses—including the Religious as Culture course required for the minor--commonly have a fieldwork component—e.g., visiting local churches, group trips to DaVinci Code. This is also the case for various applied ethics courses.

The MA program in Practical Philosophy and Applied Ethics has internships. The program has a relationship for this purpose with Vitakon's The Vision Institute. One student in hospitality ethics is pursuing an internship with the Jacksonville Tourist and Convention Bureau on implementing relevant ethics codes and ethics decision-making.

What opportunities are available for undergraduate research or creative projects in your program?

In addition to many thesis opportunities, both undergrad and graduate, the department is very active is promoting student research through the Undergraduate Academic Enrichment Program. Essays by the 2006 best paper prize winners in philosophy and religious studies are currently being prepared for publication in the Osprey Journal.

What study abroad opportunities are available in your department?

None currently exists. However, plans are in the works for a philosophy-ethics center-business college summer study travel to Europe .

A study abroad program in global ethics was included in the department's unsuccessful 2006 flagship proposal.

What other transformational and experiential learning opportunities exist for your students?

Two notable examples include the monthly Philosophy “Slams”—meetings by students at the Fuel Coffee House to discuss current and pressing philosophical issues and the annual Northeast Florida Student Philosophy Conference.

The department arranges for special seminars and question-and-answer sessions for students--graduates and undergrads, respectively—in conjunction with speaking visits to UNF by recognized philosophers—e.g., Peter Singer and Anthony Appiah.
