What internship, fieldwork, service learning, and/or practicum opportunities are available in your program?
Many of our students participate in independent studies that focus on compositional techniques and concepts that will ultimately culminate with a substantial composition or arrangement suitable for performance. Jazz Ensemble 1 generally dedicates a whole concert program in the spring semester to student compositions, many of which have received national awards.
What study abroad opportunities are available in your department?
It so happens that our Concert Choir will be traveling to Portugal (spring 2007) to participate in a performance of a magnificat by the contemporary Portuguese composer, Eurico Carapatozo. To perform this significant work totally immersed in the composer's environment should truly be a TLO moment.
What other transformational and experiential learning opportunities exist for your students?
The UNF Wind Ensemble will be performing at the Florida Music Educator's Association state conference (one of the top four such conferences in the country) Jan. 12, 2007. To my knowledge, this will be the first time that a classical large ensemble from this institution has ever performed at this event. The preparation and performance should provide ample opportunities for a TLO experience.
Jazz Ensemble 1 has already performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival this fall as winner's of the college division and will be appearing at the 60 th Anniversary Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic (the world's largest music conference) with guest trumpet artist Doc Seversen in Chicago on Dec. 22, 2006.
