What internship, fieldwork, service learning, and/or practicum opportunities are available in your program?
The department offers a course titled Internship in History that consists of a supervised work experience in a historical, archaeological or cultural organization in Northeast Florida able to provide a meaningful academic experience for students. The department has worked out arrangements with several organizations, including the St. Augustine Historical Society’s Research Library and the Mandarin Historical Society.
What opportunities are available for undergraduate research or creative projects in your program?
Florida History Online is a website operated by the Department of History and posted on the University of North Florida server. It is a digital history archive of textual and visual documents and historical narratives transcribed and/or composed by UNF students and faculty. Students can enroll in AMH 4491 Seminar: Local History, or other department courses to work on independent research projects as directed by qualified faculty mentors, with online publication as the goal of their work. Two recent seminars focused on Jacksonville, Florida during the American Civil War. Students working under Dr. Daniel Schafer’s direction conducted research in archives in Florida and at the National Archives and Record Administration in Washington, DC, with the goal of revising Jacksonville’s Ordeal by Fire: A Civil War History, published in 1984 by the Florida Publishing Company. The revised book is expected to be published in 2007 with several chapters authored by UNF students. This project will also result in a webpage published on Florida History Online.
What study abroad opportunities are available in your department?
EUH 2957 Core Abroad: Landmarks of Western Civilization is an example of the Department of History’s study abroad opportunities. The course offers students an opportunity to study major cultural landmarks in European countries each summer. The following example will be offered to students in the future.
In future summers, Professor Charles Closmann of the Department of History will take twenty students to Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary for a course entitled, “War, Genocide and Division: Central Europe from 1939 to 1999.” Based on the theme of World War II, the Iron Curtain, and the New Europe, our two-week trip will visit numerous historically significant sites, including the Berlin Wall, the Auschwitz Concentration Camp near Krakow, the beautiful city of Prague, and the site of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Budapest. Students will register for two courses, one in History and one in Political Science. Those interested in this trip must be registered at UNF and they must have already taken either Core I or Core II. The application process begins in the fall of each year, and although preference is given to freshmen and sophomores with high GPAs and little foreign travel experience, upper division students are also urged to apply. Partial funding is available to all students accepted for this course. This exciting, guided tour of Central Europe promises to be the trip of a lifetime and an experience that will transform the way that students think about history, politics and the world.
