Flagship Programs
In his 2004 Inauguration address, President John Delaney advanced a vision for the University of North Florida that will include the promotion of and institutional support for the selection and development of a set of academic flagship programs. According to the Provost, this initiative represents a wonderful opportunity for the university to identify programs that can serve to highlight the strengths, not only of the selected programs, but of the university generally. These programs will have a halo effect on the rest of the university, much as famous sports programs tend to bring light and attention to entire universities. UNF's Flagship programs will be tied to our inherent strengths, reflecting our core competencies and mission and will include a range of disciplines or fields of study in which we are uniquely qualified to provide regional or national leadership.
In developing these programs we will evaluate existing and potential resources and ensure strong academic leadership in each program, and the hiring of faculty and staff who can nurture these programs. In selecting flagship programs we will identify candidate programs with recognized potential; find areas where UNF would have a competitive advantage; and collect input from key stakeholders, inside and outside the University. In building flagship programs we must build an exceptional faculty both through new hires and through faculty development; provide significant financial support for the programs, including funds raised through endowments and funds to support related auxiliary programs and facilities examine and learn from other institutions with noted programs for benchmarks; recruit and attract top-quality students to the program, including, when appropriate, international students; and leverage strengths by developing partnerships inside and outside the University.
