HISTORY

Mission Statement

The mission of the History Department is to graduate liberally educated individuals who can view the world with historical perspective, appreciate the traditions of various cultures, understand the role of change and continuity, evaluate the world critically, and understand that education is a never‑ending process.

Communication Skills

Assessment Approaches

Numerous direct and indirect measures of student learning will be employed to assess mastery of the intended student learning outcomes. Course embedded assessments using a defined scoring rubric (criterion-based rating scale) will be one of the principal assessment approaches. An innovative example of this approach is the department's recent practice of exchanging senior seminar papers with colleagues at another peer university, using the same set of scoring rubrics, and evaluating the extent to which learning outcome goals are being attained. Indirect measures may include employer or alumni surveys, student perception surveys and graduate school placement rates.
