Mission Statement

 

The mission of the Department of Art and Design is to provide outstanding undergraduate teaching in the disciplines of studio arts, photography, graphic design and art history, encouraging analytical, applied and theoretical skills while providing opportunities for transformational experiences such as internships and study tours abroad.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

 

UNF Art graduates will be able to:

 

Content Knowledge/Disciplinary Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrate a general knowledge of the nature, origins and contributions of major civilizations.
  
  
• Demonstrate a general knowledge of the methods and traditions of analysis in the history of art.
  
  
• Interpret and ascribe meaning in the visual arts.

 

Critical Thinking Skills

• Analyze works of art, architecture or visual communications within the concentrations of art history, ceramics & sculpture and painting.
  
  
• Judge and evaluate the cultural context and relevance of works of art from the past and contemporary settings.
  
  
• Understand the characteristics of various media and materials.

 

Communication Skills

• Communicate a complex idea in spoken or written form.
  
  
• Communicate a complex idea through a chosen medium (whether painting, drawing, sculpture, or ceramics).
  
• Consider, analyze and respect values and ideas transmitted in the arts that are difficult, challenging and controversial.

Assessment Approaches

 

Numerous direct and indirect measures of student learning will be employed to assess mastery of the intended student learning outcomes. Course embedded assessments using a defined scoring rubric (criterion-based rating scale) and portfolio reviews will be principle direct assessment approaches. These direct measures will be supplemented by numerous indirect measures such as alumni surveys, graduating senior surveys and other student perception surveys.
