EDUCATION
Mission Statement
The Art Education program is designed
to prepare a small but steady supply of art educators for K-12 schools in the Northeast Florida region. The program is designed to produce art
educators who reflect high levels of professional behavior through the ongoing
pursuit of scholarly inquiry, active reflection on professional practice, and
service to the profession and the community.
The core learning objectives of the Art
Education program are correlated to the National Visual Arts Standards,
National Art Education Association, the College of Education and Human Services
Conceptual Framework, as well as the Florida Accomplished Practices at the
pre-professional level ( AP 1-Assessment, AP 2-Communication, AP 3-Continuous
Improvement, AP 4-Critical Thinking, AP 5-Diversity, AP-6 Ethics, AP 7-Human
Development and Learning, AP 8-Knowledge of Subject Matter, AP 9-Learning
Environments, AP 10-Planning, AP 11-Role of the Teacher, AP 12-Technology).
Student Learning Outcomes
UNF Art Education Majors will be able
to:
Content/Discipline Knowledge &
Skills
- Use evidence, case studies, and videotaped episodes of authentic
teaching to identify effective teaching strategies.
- Understand the historical development
of K-12 art education in America and how it has been influenced by various
educational movements and milestones within the past two centuries.
- Develop and demonstrate skills in
drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, photography (traditional
or digital), and crafts.
- Demonstrate breadth of knowledge about art concepts and
techniques.
- Develop skills in accommodating and
providing effective art instruction for children whose first language is not
English (E.S.O.L.).
- Demonstrate understanding of the
artistic development of children and adolescents.
- Develop skills in the selection and use of technology to assist
all students in learning.
- Demonstrate understanding of concepts and principles of
behaviorism, social cognitive theory, information processing, constructivist views of learning, and motivation.
- Develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively manage
the classroom environment.
- Develop knowledge and skills to design, assess, and implement
instruction that is inclusive of special needs learners and speakers of other
languages.
Communication
Skills
- Use materials, processes and techniques to create art for
distribution and aesthetic expression.
- Develop a portfolio using students' work samples with guidance
and approval of the art faculty.
Critical
Thinking Skills
- Reflect on the global nature of art
education in the 21st century.
- Translate personal expressions of art and aesthetic values into
art form.
- Apply methods of analysis and interpretation of art critique, art
history, art studio, and aesthetics.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate K-12 art
learning experiences in art studio, art history, aesthetics, and criticism.
- Examine the creative uses of art material, the various
possibilities of art forms, developmental procedures, and resources.
- Apply essential concepts and principles of learning theories
(behaviorism, social cognitive theory, information processing, theory,
constructivist learning theory) in the context of authentic teaching events.
- Create assessment tools such as
rubrics, rating scales, and anecdotal records for use in evaluating student
progress in art.

Assessment Approaches
UNF graduates of the B.A.E program in
Art Education will demonstrate mastery of content knowledge and teaching skills
through proficiency on course embedded assessments, activities, and critical
task assessments in core, major, and clinical experiences at a proficiency
level expected of a teacher candidate. It is expected that teacher candidates
apply knowledge throughout the program by demonstrating understanding, competence,
and effective implementation. Assessment strategies include:
- Assignments and other formal formative, summative, and authentic
assessments;
- Successful completion of critical tasks in specific courses;
- Participation in class discussions, reflections, and critiques that
provide a dynamic forum for developing ideas and demonstrating knowledge;
- Analysis of
teaching performances in field experiences and methods courses; and
- Development of meaningful learning experiences that address
learning and performance modes based on principles of effective instruction.
