PHYSICAL EDUCATION

 

Mission Statement

 

The Physical Education Teacher Program prepares professionals to teach students in K - 12 physical education programs in addition to directing youth in intramural and athletic programs. Pysical educators provide leadership in a variety of school-based roles. Professional preparation in physical education emphasizes the development of candidates who will model pedagogical effectiveness and engage in active leadership roles in physical activity/health for schools and community organizations.

 

The core learning objectives of the Physical Education Program are correlated to NASPE's Standards for Initial Programs in Physical Education Teacher Education, Subject Matter Content Standards for Florida's Teachers: K-12 Physical Education, College of Education and Human Services Conceptual Framework, as well as Florida's Accomplished Practices for Teachers at the pre-professional level - AP 1 Assessment, AP 2 Communication, AP 3 Continuous Improvement, AP 4 Critical Thinking, AP 5 Diversity, AP 6 Ethics, AP 7 Human Growth and Development, AP 8 Knowledge of Subject Matter, AP 9 Learning Environments, AP 10 Planning, AP 11 Role of the Teacher, and AP 12 Technology.

Content/Discipline Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrate knowledge and application of learning theory and curriculum models for motor skill, physical fitness, intellectual, emotional, and social development.
  
  
• Demonstrate knowledge of the mission, goals, and scope of the modern physical education program.
  
  
• Demonstrate knowledge of the history, philosophy, purposes, and values of physical education.
  
  
• Demonstrate knowledge of facts, theories, and research relating to motor development/learning, healthful living, and the physiological basis of physical activity.
  
  
• Demonstrate skills and knowledge in individual/dual and team sports.
  
  
• Demonstrate skills and knowledge in health-related fitness activities.
  
  
• Develop skills in the selection and use of technology to assist all students in learning.
  
  
• Demonstrate understanding of concepts and principles of behaviorism, social cognitive theory, information processing, constructivist views of learning, and motivation.
  
  
• Develop knowledge, skills, and dispositions to effectively manage the classroom environment.
  
  
• Develop knowledge and skills to design, assess, and implement instruction that respectful of special needs learners and speakers of other languages.
  
  

 

Critical Thinking

• Apply teaching strategies appropriate to the developmental level of students and for the purpose of content being developed.
  
  
• Use research to inform teaching practices.
  
  
• Apply instructional competencies in coaching team and individual/dual sports.

Communication Skills

• Communicate and interact with students including those with special needs and diverse backgrounds in the teaching/ learning environment.
  
  
• Adapt instruction, activities, resources, and assessment to meet the needs of students for whom English is a second language.

Assessment Approaches

 

UNF graduates of the B.A.E program in Physical Education program will demonstrate mastery of content knowledge and teaching skills through proficiency on course embedded assessments, activities, and critical task assessments in core, major, and clinical experiences at a proficiency level expected of a teacher candidate. It is expected that teacher candidates apply knowledge throughout the program by demonstrating understanding, competence, and effective implementation.

Assessment strategies include:

• Assignments, and formal formative, summative, and authentic assessments;
  
  
• Successful completion of critical tasks in sport cultural awareness and equipment modification;
  
  
• Formative evaluation of class discussions, reflections, and critiques which provide evidence of developing ideas and opportunities for the demonstration of knowledge;
  
  
• Analysis of teaching performances in field experiences; and
  
  
• Development of meaningful learning experiences that address learning and performance modes based on principles of effective instruction.
