Internship credit is good for 3 Academic Credit Hours unless otherwise discussed.
To be accepted by a government agency, business or nonprofit, you need to contact the agency with your resume and see if they have availability. You are expected to be professional in your interaction with the agency. Likewise, the agency should be professional with you as well. You need to be registered by the end of drop/add week.
Once you are accepted, you have some forms and waivers to fill out at the Political Science Department office - Building 51/2412. At this point, you will be given permission to register for the internship course. You are expected to work 150 hours during the semester, get a letter of evaluation from your supervisor and also complete a written summary of your internship work.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio Jacksonville Internship
We are currently looking for students who are interested in serving as interns in U.S. Senator Marco Rubio’s Jacksonville Office. This opportunity will allow students to learn first-hand about public service and the workings of the U.S. Senate. In addition to administrative duties, interns support office staff by addressing constituent concerns, working with federal agencies to resolve Floridian’s issues, participating in outreach efforts, attending local events, and assisting the staff on special projects.
The program is designed to provide the knowledge, skills and tools that will assist our interns in all future professional endeavors as well as motivate the interns’ interest in public service. This is an unpaid internship.

Internship Program with US Senator Bill Nelson
We are accepting internship applications for any student interested in gaining experience in the Jacksonville office of U.S. Senator Bill Nelson. We have positions open now and also for the Summer term.
Interns work directly with Sen. Nelson’s staff to assist and respond to the constituents of Florida by: answering phones, taking caller opinions, and expressing the Senator’s stance on issues and active topics. Other administrative duties include: greeting office visitors, attending events on behalf of the Senator, and completing various correspondence tasks such as writing letters.

Emergency Management Internship for Students
The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) is seeking part-time interns with an interest in emergency management to fill a variety of positions throughout the state of Florida. Interns can expect to have a substantive and rewarding experience as a part of our team.
Headquartered in Tallahassee, the agency plans and prepares for all types of disaster events. This includes but is not limited to hurricanes, floods, terrorist acts, incidents involving hazardous materials and nuclear plants. We coordinate disaster response and recovery, and also take steps to mitigate against their impact. FDEM also makes a strong effort to collect and disseminate emergency information to educate the public about preparedness.
Potential duties:
- Participate in exercise and training events
- Assist with outreach and education efforts
- Review or update emergency plans and reports
- Perform grant management activities
- Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other guidance
- Conduct research projects
- Support database and technical information systems
- Prepare grant applications
- Manage financial reconciliations
- Participate in planning meetings
- Coordinate planning conferences
Applicants are expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week for full consideration. This is an unpaid internship with academic credit available for all positions.

Chief of Staff
The Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff are jointly responsible for advancing the agenda and policy initiatives of the mayor. Responsibilities include managing the executive staff, oversight of all legislative activities, community outreach, policy development, scheduling and public relation activities. Interns will work alongside staff in matters concerning policy and research.
Chief Administrative Officer
The Chief Administrative Officer and Deputy Chief Administrative Officer provide oversight of the day-to-day operations of the City of Jacksonville. These top executive positions are responsible for the managing the implementation of all departments, policies and initiatives for the city. Interns will work with staff facilitate operations activities.
Policy
The policy director(s) monitor and lobby local, state and federal legislation that impact the City of Jacksonville. Essential functions in this capacity include issue resolution and resolution, and the guidance and direction of legislation and proposals. Interns will be involved in legislative tracking and document preparation.
Education Commissioner
The office of the education commissioner acts as a local champion and advocate of education. Interns will be involved in research and community events.
Scheduling and Advance
In scheduling and advance, requests from speaking engagements to meeting requests for the mayor and executive staff are received and processed, along with the coordination of event participation. Interns will be involved in frequent interaction with event organizers to ensure details are included in scheduling calendars.
Duval County Democratic Executive Committee
The Duval County Democratic Executive Committee (DCDEC) is looking for enthusiastic future leaders for our 2013 summer and fall internship programs. The DCDEC is the county chapter of the Florida Democratic Party and the Democratic National Committee. In addition to typical intern duties you will have the chance to volunteer in community outreach projects and grassroots organizing and assist at DEC functions, including attending political meetings and social events and networking with candidates and elected officials. Social media use, communications experience and statistical research experience is a plus but not required.
