Chemistry is offering several unique courses for Fall 2012.  They  should be of interest to students with no prior scince training or investigating informational processes or those who have an interest in research applications.  Here are the course descriptions for them; the upper level courses have limited enrollment.

The Cool Side of Chemistry (3 Credit Hours) Melissa Bush

The only prerequisite is a keen interest in how the world around you works - even if you don't have a lot of science and math background. 

 

What are the uses of Chemistry in everyday life? What's really in the water we drink?  How do chemical heatpacks work?  How does soap clean?  What's the difference between baking soda vs. baking powder?  Why is Chemistry important?  Students will explore a variety of focus areas in which Chemistry is relevant: consumer products, food & nutrition, the environment, the material world, and the human body.  No prior chemistry experience is required and there is no lab associated with it.  This course intends to better prepare students to be well-informed citizens.

Chemometrics (3 Credit Hours) Dr. Stuart Chalk

This course introduces students to the use of statistical analysis in Chemistry.  Junior or senior standing, and permission of the instructor. Class size is limited to 24 students.

Environmental Chemistry (3 Credit Hours) Dr. Radha Pyati

Pre-requisites:  CHM 3120C and CHM 2210

This course examines the sources, reactions, transport, effects, and fates of chemical species in the water, soil, and air environments.  This up-to-the-minute course is offered only during the Fall term.  Class size is limited to 30 students.

Envioronmental Chemistry Lab (1 Credit Hour) Melissa Bush

Co requisite:  CHS 4615

This lab course will demonstrate some of the techniques for monitoring substances in the environment.  Students will be expected to work independently on problems related to real environmental problems or principles.  This three hour lab is limited to 18 students and a $59 lab fee will be assessed.
